Variable thickness in new rotor?
Moderator: robbosmans
So, can a new rotor have bits where the thickness is slightly variable?
Asking, becuase I have spent bloody ages trying to true a new rotor and can't get it right at one spot.
On closer look, it seems that it is because this spot is slightly thicker and therefore it will always touch on one side, no matter what I do. When I roll the rotor through the caliper, seems there is less gap on both sides at this one spot (trick of the eyes, I don't know?).
Is this a thing and does it wear to even quickly?
(no calipers to hand to check the actual thickness)

I'm guessing most rotors are laser cut from sheet steel so while it's not impossible I'd be surprised if there was much variation in thickness. You'd hope the relevant QA department would be keeping an eye on raw material thickness as a priority.

If there was a slight variation in thickness, you could not see it by just looking at it. And I doubt there is any. New rotors can be warped. Either this or your brake caliper is misaligned.
Sooner or later you will need a caliper to measure your disc anyway (min. thickness).

I have had 2 new 160mm rotors warped straight out of the brand new packaging.......
Well all I can say, is that I took the bike out to bed in the new rotors and then do a ride and when I came back, no more rubbing and it was running well within tolerances, so who knows what the problem was.
(I do have calipers, just didn't have them where I was this morning!!).

*f##k* me I thought I was the only one. I had a brand new set for my customer which is warped like hell as well.
I had to true it before sending it out, damn annoying.

Shitty quality control all round. Never should a brake rotor leave the factory warped......
