I'm new here and wanted to pick your collective knowledge before I buy N+1. My current main steed is a 2017 Trek Domane SLR-7 Disc that weighs in at 18.2lbs (8.25kg) and I've thought about adding something lighter to the collection for rides under 40 miles (64km) with lots of climbing. While it looks like a sub 15lb (6.8kg) disc brake bike is way out of my price range, it appears that some older lightweight rim brake bikes can be had at reasonable prices. What I found first was a '16 Trek Emonda SLR 8 when helping a friend look for a bike but am wanting some help on what budget lightweight bikes I should be looking for.

I've been looking at 2016-2018 Trek Emonda SLR's, 2016-2019 Cannondale SuperSix Evo High Mod's, and Scott Addict Team Issue/SL from about the same vintage. What other bikes should I be looking at? I know a light frame is the most important thing as everything else can be upgraded at some point. Are there any reasons to pick one of the above frames over the other?

Currently locally I have the '16 Trek Emonda SLR-8 with Dura-Ace 9000 mechanical and Brontrager Speed Stop brakes and Brontrager Aeolus 30 rims. The bike looks in good shape other than the bar tape is shot. From what I can tell everything is all original. I also have a '14 Scott Addict Team Issue built in 2016 with Sram Force 22 groupset and brakes. and 41mm carbon rims. I know the rims and groupset are not OEM. The stem is also a carbon Syncros but isn't the stock stem.

I'd really like Di2 (or eTap) but don't mind converting it later if I can, and I want a compact chainset (which I think both have) and would really like to be able to use an 11-32 cassette.

Thanks for your help!

I also am starting a light weight bike build, mainly short hill climbs, and picked up a 2016 emonda SLR H-1 (used, great condition) in size 62 which are hard to find. I was told the problems with a lot of these used trek bb90 bottom brackets is getting one that has a good fit that won't creek or flex in the carbon frame. I bought a Hambini Trek BB90 Bearing Kit for Shimano Crank, but I went with a sram red gxp crank and bbinfinite bb.(I only needed the standard bearing, not the larger repair bearing (like the Hambini kit) because my carbon bb frame is still good fit with standard size bearings.

I can recommend a rim brake Giant Propel Advanced SL, or the TCR equivalent. Light, fast, responsive and quite cheap now.

I enjoy my lighter rim brake bike more, it's more fun to ride (except when the weather is bad).

I'll add the Propel/TCR Advanced SL to the list. Currently there's only one in my size around - and it's overpriced but I'm not in a hurry.

Izalco is a logical choice but the external cabling on most of them mean you can't readily convert to Di2

I agree with the Giant TCR Advanced. I've also looked at the Wilier zero.6 or zero.7. And the Canyon Ultimate CF or the Fuji SL 1.1 are also very light. I couldn't find any of those in stock or used in my size (rim brake models), so I've recently ordered an Emonda SLR RSL H1 52cm frame and hope to build it to around 5.7kg / 12.5lbs with 45mm deep wheels and SRAM Red mechanical.

Another vote for the older generation TCR here. Would be stiff for climbing, light if you get the SL (my large 2015 currently running at 6.7kg, 2016 is lighter still).

Dont know how you feel about Chinesium but there are some pretty light builds on current frames out there

Can't recall the names but one guy has a sub 5kg rim brake bike and another dude (Klaster_1?) is approaching sub 5s with a disc build (admittedly 1x). Won't be hard to find a Chinese frame in the 800-900g range for cheap. I think a Chinese frameset with ~1200g wheels and Ultegra will come in under 7kg no problem.

2008 Lemond Tete de Course or Victoire (that's the Triomphe Ultimate frame), with a Look HSC5 SL fork swapped in. Those framsets I have handled (and weighed) have been between 1150 and 1180 grams.
