What older lightweight bikes to start with?

Pretty much anything rim brake and carbon will be under 15lbs if you get tubular wheels. I have a 2007 Cervelo P3 (bike in my sig) converted to an aero road bike and w/out pedals it's 6.75kgs/14.85lbs. The frame weighs something like 1250 grams but I'm running Reynolds tubs that weigh 1140 grams. I'm not even rocking the lightest tires. If I got super light tires, a lighter crank and a lighter cassette, I'd probably be under 14lbs and likely under 15 w/pedals. With clinchers, I was at like 6.99kgs/15.05lbs w/pedals. Tubs/light wheels in general are the key to a light build IMO. If all these components were on an actual light frame, like say 1000 grams (which isn't even that light, you can get Chinese open mould frames that weigh 800 grams all day), it would easily be a mid-low 14lb build.

If you're getting a carbon frame, I'd suggest getting something that is comfortable and that you like first and foremost, b/c if you're going rim brake with a carbon frame, it's not very hard to hit 6.8kgs with a few dollars invested.
2014 Madone 5.9 w/R9100 shifters and R8000 everything else- using 38mm ICANs or 60/90 SuperTeams- 7.25kgs with the ICANs and Garmin Vector S dual sided PM pedals- not super light but not a dog, either!

Currently locally I have the '16 Trek Emonda SLR-8 with Dura-Ace 9000 mechanical and Brontrager Speed Stop brakes and Brontrager Aeolus 30 rims. The bike looks in good shape other than the bar tape is shot. From what I can tell everything is all original. I also have a '14 Scott Addict Team Issue built in 2016 with Sram Force 22 groupset and brakes. and 41mm carbon rims. I know the rims and groupset are not OEM. The stem is also a carbon Syncros but isn't the stock stem.

I'd really like Di2 (or eTap) but don't mind converting it later if I can, and I want a compact chainset (which I think both have) and would really like to be able to use an 11-32 cassette.

My 2013 Wilier Zero.7, was almost 12lbs with the larger seatpost. This particular version was electronic only and when new, it would've been for Di2 7900.

It was one of the most comfortable bikes I've owned and only sold it because it was one size too large.

It's funny you mention that as I found a good deal on a 2015 Wilier Zero.7 and I should have it Tuesday :)

Yours will be aero, lighter and more comfortable.
