And the 520 came out a year before the 820 and look where that lead of the "fives" went: a 520+ appeared as a stopgap to fill the time from vanilla 520 to the shared 530/830 release. I expect the 1030+ to be the same for a shared 540/840/1040 release.
Back in the days before the 830/530, the different price points still meant quite different chip capabilities. As a consequence of that it made sense to develop the software separately. Certainly with some shared bits, but clearly separted. 530 and 830 however share software down to common firmware update releases and the hardware is so similar that they don't even have separate radio certification (though apparently not interchangeable: on the FCC internals you can see that the 530 board has the pads for the connector to the 830's digitizer, but the pads were left empty). Future "tens" and "eights" will probably not be *that* similar, but I doubt that they'll aim for a serious trickle down release delay. If they did the 1040 ahead of 840/540, people in the market for a 5/8 would be discouraged from buying and while some of the "eight" customers would be upsold to the "ten", just as many others might go "can't decide between the oversized 1040 and the outdated 830, screw it, I'll take a Wahoo".
And the biggest difference to earlier Edge releases is that these days, cycling is much smaller relative to the rest of Garmin Fitness than it used to be. Not because cycling has shrunk, but because watches went through the roof. I suspect that they'd rather tick off all cycling price points in one slightly bigger effort than maintain a continuous stream of a new Edge device every six months at the "cost" of doing one movie-themed niche watch less (seriously, who buys these things???)

I noticed on B&H Photo that the 830 (and 830 kits) are listed as no longer available. Could this be due to an update coming?

Dunno. But FWIW I think it highly likely they replace 830 and 1030 either at the same time or close together this time. There's not really enough to recommend either over the 530 atm except screen size for the 1030.
Less shitty and more legible maps, useful re-routing and navigation in dense and semi-dense roads / bikepaths / route areas, Strava integration that isn't absolute trash, better screens, and finally better UX would be what I'd hope to see ... because for the 'market leader', they are sorely lacking in these areas.

No rumors to pass on, but I've been seeing the 530 discounted a lot in recent weeks, and if past history is a guide, that means a new offering is coming soon.woodyvalentine wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 1:01 amAnybody have any 540/530 plus rumour info?

Yep. Discounted everywhere pretty much (Garmin directly, plus all the main online sites, as well as some smaller ones). Which is why I was asking. In the market for a new comp. and with the bugs on Wahoo's new release, going to wait for this. But am eager to replace.
Discounted everywhere indeed
Garmin generally launches new products before the IFA (end of August early September) but it's been canceled this year.
Last year it took about 1 month after discounting 1030 and 130 to launch their "plus" versions

So anywhere from 1 month all the way to 2022 which could be Dec. 2022. More likely I guess in the 1-12 month range then.
lol, big gap. Anything else mentioned?woodyvalentine wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 4:46 pmSo anywhere from 1 month all the way to 2022 which could be Dec. 2022. More likely I guess in the 1-12 month range then.
It's all about the adventure .
Yeah, that info is not helping at all. I love Garmins functionality, but after using a KH2 it feels like a 10 year old eletronic device.. But I would be very surprised if they would do anything in the UI department. I will be faster and have more functions, thats it.. Kind of sucks that they are stuck with that old operating system.woodyvalentine wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 4:46 pmSo anywhere from 1 month all the way to 2022 which could be Dec. 2022. They use Android. Like HammerHead and Wahoo and Bryton and Sigma.henau212 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 6:53 amYeah, that info is not helping at all. Garmins definitely don't use Android. As a UX designer myself, I don't understand how/why people still bother with Garmins and that awful UI, when there's the Hammerhead Karoo 2 available. I have a Karoo and it's incredible, like having a tiny modern smartphone. The UI is so easy to use and is snappy and fast and is loaded with features.
Cyclists should demand more from Garmin. If we keep buying their trash, they'll keep putting it out.
