Surprised Garmin hasn't released the 530+/830+ Or 540/840's yet. I thought we'd see something in the summer. Covid delays likely.

Everything is delayed by covid. It's the go to excuse for every manufacturer.

I believe the normal release schedule of Garmin stipulates 2022 for the next 500 and 800 series of Garmin bike computers.

1030+ was an emergency update because the lower margin 830 (and the 5) were eating too much of the higher margin 1030 market. It was simply an update to 530/830 generation chips. No pressure like that exists for 530/830, don't expect a "plus" version for those, and like others have said, their regular update rhythm would put the 40ies in 2022.

Personally I wouldn't even be surprised if it turned out to be 2023 (or at least late 22) because now that 10/8/5 aren't in a trickle down relationship anymore but just different form factors of the same I expect a concurrent release for all three. Just like the 530/830 release, which was also completely unheard of at the time. Note how changelogs and minor version numbers are already identical between 530, 830 and both 1030ies: if they released a completely new generation only on one form factor line they'd habe to go back to separate software lineages again.

If you look at the time between older releases, then I would not expect 840 before 2022. Maybe plus version this year, but there has neever been a 800 series plus version.

510 - 2013 Q1
520 - 2015 Q3
520P - 2018 Q2
530 - 2019 Q2

810 - 2013 Q1
820 - 2016 Q3
830 - 2019 Q2

1000 - 2014 Q2
1030 - 2017 Q3
1030P - 2020 Q4

I had 520 before 530, and 530 has everything I wanted 520 to have. If you are ok with 520 buttons, then I would recommend 530, as it`s cheaper, and you avoid unwanted issues with touchscreen.
...and now we are in 2022.....

Time for a 840 to be announced??

Hopefully this time with a stronger battery than in the 830!(EDIT: 820 not 830)

1040 has already dropped at the FCC, with an accidental (or deliberately leaked?) mention of the name in the label sample PDF. There's a second unit with a similar product code published on the same day without a product name leak. Might be an 840 or perhaps just some variant of the 1040 that is sufficiently different to mandate separate certification.

My 830 already lasts almost 24 hours. How much more would you need?

Yeah, the 1030+ is reaching the point where I'd rather see further energy use improvements be used for a smaller batter than for even more runtime

Some FCC filings from Garmin recently - Edge Explore 2 - apparently confidential until October.
https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/IPH-04457/

Edge 1040 - August? https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/IPH-A4211/

+ Some other stuff with release early June?

Nice catch. Let's hope they release the devices soon.

What are we expecting? I can't really see them drastically improving dynamic re-routing or map detail, as it's the same across all their devices - not just cycling - and it's crap. Those are the two things where they've fallen behind. Probably they want to keep sytem / feature parity across everything still.

Built-in solar charging is the hottest tip, but I guess we'll see. DC Rainmaker has been censoring some of his bike computers from unrelated images recently, so I guess one of the units is at least out on reviews.

The Amoled on the Epix is a nice touch, I’d be surprised not to see it on an Edge at some point

My bad! I meant the Edge 820 that I have ....
(have to deit my post)

Could you give me some more details about your battery life in your Edge 830?
Which sensors do you have connected?
How long does it last for a ride?

(I have a 820 connected to Di2, powermeter, hear rate belt, and Garmin radar and it just last 3 hours despite being a 2 y.o device)

The 520/820 series is very outdated. It's slow and had abysmal battery life from the start. Edge 530, 830 or 1030+ are in a completely different league in both regards. It will feel like night and day. Garmin claims a battery life of up to 20 hours for the 830. When I used my Edge 530 (before I switched to Wahoo) I could get about 16 hours easily while navigating (though not on map screen all the time) and having 4 sensors connected.
