As much as I admire the weight of the Aethos, the sloping top tube and ridiculously long seatpost results in an odd looking bike in larger sizes.

So, what you seem to be saying is that if a rider has unusual proportions, then a bike looks...........unusual? The Aethos itself seems to have unremarkable geometry as far as I can tell.
imo, the seattube, or better the junction seattube/toptube is remarkably short/low. f.e., its, over the whole size range, about 6cm shorter as the seattube of the izalco max gen1, which already has quite an amount of sloping. thats, why, imo, most aethos builds look, quite unbalanced.
but, just my opinion, finally a matter of taste.

I don't know the seat tube length for that first gen Izalco Max off the top of my head, but I think the Aethos is about 30mm less than many typical frames (around 535 for a 56 equivalent). Focus have always tended to more level top tubes.
I quite agree that, as long as you're not talking of extremes, it's a matter of taste for most purposes.

maquisard wrote:I am curious of your saddle height, BB to top of saddle. It looks like you have a lot of seat post exposed. I also ride 56cm but with 775mm saddle height and am curious how much post would be exposed if I bought the Aethos
Finally got round to measuring it…..811mm …… interesting, as usually I ride around 826mm ….
And yes the frame looks very very small…….yet next to my SL7 the handlebars are a touch higher. I think the sloping TT that looks quite extreme makes the bike look a little strange in larger sizes.
But let us see how it rides…..

Can anyone explain how to swap stems on the S-Works Athos? Is there some kind of special tool needed to loosen the proprietary expander nut thing at the top of the fork? I've loosened the stem bolts and removed the stem/cockpit top cap but the stem won't budge?
Im trying to swap my 100x42 Alpinist cockpit for a 120x42 Alpinist. (Note: I also have a 100x42 for sale in like-new condition. PM if interested).

Hmm, I think releasing the expander might help take the pressure off the stem. You don't need a special tool, but there is a technique to it. There are probably videos on YouTube showing it but briefly: The bolt goes through two free-to-move conical wedges and pulls them together to create the compression against the outer sleeve. Unscrew the bolt until it is almost fully out. Then work the bolt side-to-side to free the top wedge, then remove. Put the bolt back in, screwing into the bottom wedge and tap down gently to free it. Good luck!
Shame your old alpinist bar is not 400x100 or I would be sorely tempted!

No. You shouldn't need to undo the expander to take the stem off unless something else has gone wrong. The expander works like any other expander and the stem works like any other stem.
Can you twist the stem on the steerer? If you can do that you can work it up and off. If the stem is stuck fast then you've got issues. Did the people who built it use a retaining compound for some reason?

I agree that it should not be required, but there is a very tight tolerance between the steerer and stem and it does not seem out of the question that it would stick, especially if the plug was over-torqued.
Separately if there is grip paste in there (a good theory), you should take this up with the builder. Specialized specify that grip paste shound not be used on this interface.

Looks great! Which seat post are you using there? I'm building an Aethos with Roval Alpinist CLX and Di2. I expect the weight will be somewhere around 14.5 lbs when all is said and done.

You should be able to get quite a bit lower than that with DA Di2 and Alpinist Wheels.
The seatpost is Schmolke TLO (the lightest one) black edition straight in 350mm length for riders up to 80kg. Came in at sub 100g with all parts.

For a guy who usually argues in favor of aero or in the lines of "you won't feel the difference of those less 200gr on your bike" you were very specific on the seatpost. "the lightest one".
Not judging just found it curious

It's not really "the lightest" seat post. That's what TLO stands for in schmolke products
.
And yeah, the only change that made a realistically noticeable difference is the wider tires at lower pressure. Losing 200g or so probably not so much, considering I usually get around 90m of elevation gain in 40k of riding

Yep, thought it was Schmolke. I had the same post on my Canyon EVO. That bike was about 13 lbs with no pedals. Full SRAM AXS.
