Hi all,

I have just installed an axs cassette on a powertap G3 hub. I installed a type B2 novatec freehub to make this possible.

For a reason I can't understand the 26t is rubbing against the spokes. As far as I know I'm not supposed to be adding a spacer but it seems like I need one. The wheel has been built by a local builder who has always gone a great job for me. I can't see anything obviously wrong with the build.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

The smallest cassettes are the trickiest to get to clear.

An 11sp shimano 34t cassette was designed to fit a 10sp freehub because the big cog can clear the spokes.

How much space is there between the endcap and the 10t cog? If you have the right freehub and endcap there shouldn't be much space there. Half of the chain plus 2mm or so. Also there should be 142mm (ta) between the endcaps.

I thought powertap hubs used dt internals. Does a novatec freehub really work?

PowerTap hubs do, in fact, use Novatec freehubs.

Will get some pics ASAP.

From memory the end cap spacing looks about right. I haven't put the chain on yet so will measure it.

130mm between endcaps for normal qick release. The chain should come close to the frame on the 10t cog but obviously not touch.

Pics below with any luck.

To my eye the clearance with the 10t is right. The cassette pics are the best I can manage, the slip of paper in one of the pics only slides down between one spoke, the gap is too tight for the rest of them.

I dont see that I have the space to use a spacer on the freehub and as far as I can tell I'm missing an internal spacer.

What's the distance between the endcaps? Is it 130mm really?

I wonder if it's perhaps less and all you need to do is space out the freehub.

Are the endcaps screwed on or pushed on?

Another problem is that when you torque the wheel the crosses move outwards on this wheel. I have that too on all my wheels but if your derailleur cage is close to the spokes on the stand then you better be careful riding. It could get jammed.

End caps are push on and properly engaged

As best as I can measure it is 130. How would a space the freehub out? Are you suggesting a thin spacer between the inside face of the freehub and the hub shell bearing?

Which spacer are you using?

Type B2 freehubs come in four forms all run on a on a 15mm axle, have 2 bearings and 3 or 4 pawls. Since the 4 pawl body fits in place of the 3 pawl body. You must use the spacer that comes with the 4 pawl body though as the spacer for the 3 pawl body is different.
1.Type B2 9/10/11 speed shimano ABG freehubs 3 pawl
2.Type B2 8/9/10/11 speed alloy Shimano/SRAM freehub (ABG) 4 pawl
3.Type B2 8/9/10/11 speed steel Shimano /SRAM 4 pawl

I have no idea what spacer it is referring to as I didn’t get one with the freehub.

I have read about swapping the seals over which I have done. I have also put the old freehub back on and it sits in exactly the same place as the xdr one so I’d guess a spacer isn’t missing.

The novatec website describes the freehub as “Freehub body B2 type (B427), Sram XDR, 12speed, alloy 4-pawls, w/oil seal, w/inner spacer, ROAD type, OEM”. What would the inner spacer be?

As a piece of additional data -- I had to add a spacer to my G3 hub to prevent the cassette from rubbing on the spokes. (In my case, it was an 11 speed Campy cassette.)

I assume you mean a cassette spacer?
