Sram Red/Force AXS compatible oval chainrings?
Moderator: robbosmans
First off i've tried searching and can't find the info i'm after
I've been using gen 1 sram red etap with oval 52/36 Absolute black chainrings on my specialized roubaix for a few years, intially it was a fiddle to setup, but it has been running sweet ever since, shifts cleanly between chainrings.
I'd like to upgrade my training bike to force etap axs, partly because i'd like the extra gear range, and partly because gen 1 etap seems hard to come by now, wifli rear mechs are difficult to find and because its old tech. (i'd try di2 but the frame has limited compatibility)
A friend has Red axs with Rotor oval axs chainrings working nicely, but handily (sarcasm) they only make those in a 4-bolt pattern, i have 2x power2max 5 bolt power meters and relunctant to change these as they're accurate and incredibly realiable.
Few options: Am i best holding fire and hoping rotor, absolute black, other third party will offer a flattop chain compatible chainrings
Try to use my exisiting Ab Black chainrings with Force Etap and hope for the best
Stop moaning and use perfectly adequate mechanical gears.....
Any insight appreciated.

I was looking at the oval rings for AXS and it appears that AB is working on a 2x AXS version.
I think the rationale for switching due to the equipment availability and gearing is valid. Plus you pickup Bluetooth Smart for connectivity and use of their apps. Just remember though AXS cassettes require XD/XDR freehub so make sure your wheels can be swapped.

We have Rotor AXS chainrings 48/35 (oval or round) but they must be mounted on a Rotor 4 arms spider.
So, you actually need a complete crankset to use Rotor oval chainrings (Qrings). That can start with Vegast24 crank arms (125€) + axle (50€) + spider (35€) and then add a set of Qrings for AXS 48/35 (150€). But if you want to match with quality of Sram AXS crank, you should consider Aldhu 3d+ (30mm spindle). Aldhu is CNC machined (lighter and stiffer).

Do those Chainrings work with a Shimano r7000 crank arms?lewolive wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 7:32 pmWe have Rotor AXS chainrings 48/35 (oval or round) but they must be mounted on a Rotor 4 arms spider.

I want to upgrade to force axs, but since I already have a crank based Powermeter for the 105, I would like to keep those.
Thanks for your help.

It think there is not a real "official" option to use an existing Power2Max powermeter with SRAM AXS groupsets, because there are no chainrings on the market that 1) work with a normal 5 bolt 110 BCD crankset and 2) work with SRAM's flattop chain. That was the main reason I built my new SuperSix with 11-speed eTap.
Whenever I read something about compatibility of "standard" 11-speed chainrings (such as Rotor or whatever) the general consensus was, that these rings will not work, because the teeth of the chainrings won't fit into the narrow links of the flattop chain. I have seen a guy on Instagram though, who seems to be running Rotor chainrings with a SRAM Red or Force AXS groupset and he seems to be happy with it (at least it seems to work).

That's either not true, or a "vague" statement For oval, you are correct. But there's Carbon-Ti 110BCD 5-bolt options.floriansantana wrote: ↑Wed Apr 22, 2020 6:59 amIt think there is not a real "official" option to use an existing Power2Max powermeter with SRAM AXS groupsets

Okay.
I am also looking to play around with a 1x setup on the AXS paired with a P2M spider
Currently there are two manufacturers doing 1x 5 hole 110 bcd.
Garbaruk: https://garbaruk.com/110-bcd-5-bolt-aer ... category=5
and
Woolftooth: https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/col ... 2347345955
Garbaruk does make an oval ring also but it is just too expensive to get over to South Africa plus they use the post office and our Post office is sadly USELESS. Maybe 8 months delivery.
Thus not an option at this stage for me.
Currently I am trying to get my hands on the 48t ring from Woolftooth. It is not oval but I want to give it a go with a 10-33 cassette at the back and see where it gets me......going uphil, downhil, gaps in gears etc. The local importer is trying to get his hands on one for me.

haven't seen 2x ovals axs chainring yet. be nice to see absolute black or carbon-ti makes some available.
as for 1x, garbaruk is great, so is wolftooth and unofficially ab too.
pervious setup 44 garbaruk aero oval
now have 44 ab gravel oval 5x110 10-33 on r5
and 48 garbaruk aero oval 10-33 on s5.

Yes they do work with Shimano 7000 chainrings.HansZuDemFranz wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2020 10:57 pmDo those Chainrings work with a Shimano r7000 crank arms?lewolive wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 7:32 pmWe have Rotor AXS chainrings 48/35 (oval or round) but they must be mounted on a Rotor 4 arms spider.

Is this the chainring you have? I notice the AB website says "10, 11 and 12 speed compatible" but I thought the pitch of the 12 speed chain was different and therefore a chain and chainring couldnt fit BOTH 11spd and 12spd drivetrains?
