Cannondale Expander Plug Differences

Long time lurker, first time poster. I just picked up a 2019 Supersix Evo for a steal to replace my old CAAD10. In moving over some of the parts I noticed that the expander on my CAAD10 was quite a bit lighter (15.4g vs 40.8g), but also has less surface area. In 4 years of riding I’ve never once had a problem so I’m wondering why Cannondale beefed up the Supersix Evo one and if there is any reason not to swap them out.

But be aware that I believe from MY18 there were changes in steerer thickness and the light KP017 does not fit inside. There are 2 new versions: K35009 (flat cap) and K35058 (receassed cap).

I'd bin the new one and get something better. I had nothing but problems with mine slipping in my synapse which lead to cracking the steerer in the fork. I used a very long one in the new fork to prevent slippage, thinks it's a campag one

Cheaper is incorrect. The heavier was the one coming with the SSevo1 and with the SSe2 came the lighter version.

Regarding the « less contact area » it’s not a problem, the « fins » still support the pivot avoiding stem clamping compression forces to damage the pivot.

My 1st gen Evo came with the lighter version. I think they continued to use the older/heavier version in cheaper, more entry-level models after they introduced the lighter one but I might be wrong.

Both work well IMO, I have used the lighter one on most bikes for years without issues, even off-road. If they're installed and torqued correctly, they work fine, assuming the stems are also torqued correctly.
