My main concern with 12 speed chains is that they don't work well with oval chainrings. But it sounds like that isn't an issue?

As long as it doesn't get stuck between the chainrings.

I'm still on 10s and I'd like to try the quieter 9100 chain. I hear the inner dimensions are the same with 10s. My fear is that it will get stuck between the chainrings. My crank is 11s though (ultegra 6800).

I mentioned this several pages back, but when I had my Scott Solace with DA chain with a DA 9170 drive train and Absolute Black 52/36 oval chainrings and KMC X11 DLCV 11-speed chain, after reading this thread, I tried the 12-speed XTR chain. Initially all seemed good but mid-way through the first ride, I found I could not reliably shifting from the small to large chainring. That said, we are currently using the 12-speed XTR chain on our gravel bikes with Ultegra R8070 drive trains and WickWerks 44/34 chainrings with no issues, so I may give the XTR 12-speed chain on my C64 with AB chainrings to see how that works.

Are the AB chainring oval or thicker than normal chainrings?

Have people tried the 12 speed KMC and PNY chains with 11s Shimano drivetrains? Or is it only 12s XTR that offers this improvement / compatibility?

Has anyone been running the XTR chain on 9100 and waxing it? Does it still play nicely with the tighter tolerances maybe being more difficult for the wax to penetrate?

I have although with the slica secret lube and submerging it in. Works absolutely fine on ultegra di2 - but don't wax the quick link makes it impossible to close without a fair bit of cleaning off the wax!

Just today I've fitted Absolute Black oval chainrings (50/34) to my Foil, with a new 12 speed XTR chain (rest of set up is R9100). Seems perfect on the stand, with no issues whatsoever with front shifting. Will report back after a few rides...

Sweet, hoping that works better for you than it did for me.

I have 2 dura ace, an ultegra, an xtr12s and a kmc. No issues with any of the shimano (I have with the kmc, not sure if model or preparation related). I haven’t seen any difference waxing the m910 (using silca wax).

Why not wax the chain with the quick link already installed?

According to ZeroFriction the KMC chains have a treatment that doesn't play nicely with the wax. Thanks for the info.

Do you rotate yout waxed chains? Does the 12s xtr work nicely after of before 11s chains, do you need to adjust derailleurs between the chains?

Thanks for the info, I missed that!

I do rotate them, I use to wax them 3 by 3 or 4 by 4. I do not recall I had to tune derailleur between Shimano chains... but I likely did since I run quite different cassettes (Shimano, Edco monobloc and sram 1190).
