Hey guys,

As the subject indicates, what are your thoughts on extended usage of the XTR CN-M9100 chain on a Shimano Dura Ace 9170 groupsets?

I just put it on and rode it for one ride and all seemed very well but wonder if any of the experts have more wizened thoughts.

As the 11s chain touched the nearby sprockets in some gears, I also replaced my chain and it is less noisy and shifts a little crisper. Don't know how long it will last though, it is 0.2mm narrower...

Hey Beaver, you were the inspiration for my decision to try the change!

I rode the 12 speed XTR chain on the 11 speed 11-30 9100 cassette all summer since February and had no problems at all. Still silend and crisp shifting in competition, mountains and touring. Only the Easton EC90 SL chainrings are too slow shifting from big to smal ring under full load. Had the 12 speed pulleys from the XTR too and adjusted the B tension as high as possible almost touching the 30t for better shifting on the spaller sprockets.

What I still have to find out: Does it wear faster than the 11 speed chain?

It does not look like it is wearing faster. The chain is still okay and can not see any extra wear on the rings and sprockets due to the differend inner plate inside. The inner plate inside runs a little bit longer so that the teeth witch is on the outer plate is fixed a little bit more.

According to these results, the 12 speed chain should even last longer. :)

the M9100 chain has HG+ and has a different design than the standard 11 speed chainrings and cassettes. May not be a wise idea considering they aren't designed to mesh together.

Why not just use the eagle chain with the standard plate design?

Maybe not wise but If you do not try! Love to think that the Shimano is silent and shifts great. (KMC makes more noise in my opinion).
The XX1 is tempting durability wise but have not seen these km`s in the shop were I work. Always the 10t tooth are worn before that.

I'm keen to try this too as my 9100 drivetrain is a little too noisy for my liking.

That's my concern as well, even though I put the 12spd chain on top enjoy silence. One thing to wonder though: isn't the current dura ace chain originally the mtb chain?

Yes, you are right, but it is NOT HG+. The HG+ Chain (Shimano 12 speed) uses a completely different plate design.

The correct "replacement" in this case is the eagle XX1/XO1.

Shimano only recommends the matching sets, so 10 speed chain on 10 speed cassette, 11 speed chain on 11 speed cassette and so on.

So far noise is reduced, shifting crisper and the chain should last longer. As long as there is no excessive wear on the cassette and chainrings, there is no reason not to use it. Or does the SRAM chain do anything better?

Has anyone tried the CN-M9100 with a 1190 Red cassette?

Both the m9100 12 speed chain and xx1 12 speed chain work fine on a 1190 red cassette.
