I use Scotch 8898 blue tape for both tubeless and regular "tubed" wheels. It seems good value (a lot cheaper than traditional rim tape like Velox) and I must have done 25+ wheels so far with this roll and it hasn't even looked like failing on anything. I've used it for BMX, CX, track, road and MTB.
I haven't bothered to weigh a length but it is pretty damn light.

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

I just ordered some from amzn. DO you wrap one or double layer ?TobinHatesYou wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2019 11:12 pm
More or less, yes. Some tapes are ever slightly lighter than others. I use "green powder coat masking tape" or "green poly tape" aka 3M 8992 (and generic versions.)

I would try the 8898 next time but they come in limited widths so will try on my cross and mtn bike (8898 is 4.6mil)
Thanks

No tape is lighter than veloplugs. I use them in all my clincher wheels and I've never worn one out. I call them veloplugs but I don't use the originals. There are many copies out there that fit a wider variety of hole diameters. The copies actually stay better on the rim. It would be annoying to be roadside and have one original veloplug fall off unnoticed only to pop a perfectly good inner tube.
good idea (vplugs) and since this wheelset uses internal nipples (not my pref) this is a good alternative. Where do you buy these plugs (non orig).alcatraz wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 2:33 pmNo tape is lighter than veloplugs. I use them in all my clincher wheels and I've never worn one out. But along the lines of WW i think this will be lighter but im not worried bout the fewgrams in fact i am adding a counter balance on my wheel anyways

Nylon reinforced strapping tape was an old classic-not sure how it compares weight wise with the various tubeless tapes.
My roll is much wider than 4.6mm, it only just fits in some older (narrow) road rims. I use two layers on a road rim with high pressure, but I really doubt its needed. One layer should be enough.

I tried the original velo plugs on my 12 spoke Shamals once. They covered the hole but were so loose I had to run sticky tape around the outside to prevent them from falling out. I never bothered with any other wheels after that - didn't know there were other copies available.

He's talking about tape+adhesive thickness. Of course the tape is more than 4.6mil thick.
Anyway, green poly tape is way better than 3M 8898 or 8896. I find both those strapping tapes to be inferior to Tesa 4289 or 4298 too. The adhesive on 8898 is not very water resistant whereas the the silicone adhesive on green poly tape / 3M 8992 is very strong, doesn't dissolve when in contact with water seepage and also leaves no residue.

Yes, my anecdotes are with a tubeless setup.
Just got Rox in ultralight and reinforced. Darn plugs allowed the tube to expand after falling out.Juanmoretime wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2019 6:50 pmI use Stan’s yellow tape. Pretty light and durable. Not sure if it’s the lightest but I’ve used Rox in the past and had tubes push rhru and yep, then a flat.
