So this is a true one. Happened to me today.

So i am at a conference. I brought the van. I was selling my wifes fatbike on the side. I brought my super custom lightweight scott spark xc mountain bike to ride a local trail with a friend (darimo bars, ritche superlight grips, wren stem, fox factory sc fork, tiranium eggbeaters, raceface next g4 cranks, dt swiss xrc 1250 wheels, darimo post, berk saddle, xtr drivetrain, x01 casette. This is a proper sub 20lbs dual suspension mtb bike). We did that ride the day prior, so the bike was muddy.

Lets step back a day to discuss the bike. I am riding trail on my spark with my buddy. All rolling granite. Super unique trails. I make a slip and oops, i can no longer shift to easier gears because i had a shift lever snap off. I shift the nubbin, and ride mid casette single speed mid casette. Awesome. Eventually the derailier just decides to shift down to the small cog and stay there. The final return was a hammerfest up the climbs let me tell you (32/12).

Anyway, the next day i meet the guy in the hotel indoor/outdor car-park. You know, the semi-enclosed type where you get a ticket, with the gates. I am parked near the entrance inside)

Anyway, i sell the fatbike. I chat with the owner a bit. I even show him my spark as i needed to remove it to get the fat bike out.

It has a berk saddle. He asks what i think of it. I say it is more of a road saddle, but it is 73g and i love it.

I head back to the conference. On my way back i think... i don't think i locked my van. Someone could steal my bike. "Meh, who would steal a bike from a closed van that is near the entrance of a car park, where a security camera looks straight at that entrance, and likely includes my van in view?!?

Well, i return to my van 3 hours later, and no bike. Everything else in the van is fine. "Who would be bold enough to steal a bike u der security camera view?" I figured the bike was long gone, but i am sure the thief would be on video.

I go to buzz for help on the auto ticket kiosk. I see my bike on a bike rack closest to the kiosk/entrance.

The saddle is beside it (scratched). I find the darimo saddle cradle behind the car next to me (next to the bike rack). Snapped on one side.

The thief obviously saw my bike. Grabbed it. Sat on it, exceeded the 90kg weight limit of the seatpost, snapped the saddle off, and could not peddle the titanium crankbrothers eggbeaters in 32-12. He probaby just panicked and ditched the bike.

Anyway... friends keep joking that my weight weenie parts will brake. And they did, and saved my bike from being stolen due to my stupidity.

Terrible getaway bike.

I'd get a new seatpost too! You never know where it's been.

I need to indpect it (too lazy today), but first inspection is that it is fine aside from the broken cradle. The irony is that i have a replacement with dyneema fastners that i had yet to install. But a dropper was my next plan.

The major damage is a big long scratch in the clearcoat in the top of the saddle. Not sure what happened there aside from the rider maybe lurching into something.

I tried to view the security footage... it must be funny. The security guy has my cell, so i asked he text me to see what tey saw. Crossing my fingers.

It was a casino parking lot, so cameras are everywhere.

What a lucky outcome.

I like Brian Regan's take on this. "Can you imagine a better outcome for this story? Ehmm. With a bike still in the van untouched?"

Hey, not locking the van was a dumb move. Not arguing that. It is just funny that my weight weenie parts helped to frusterate and deter the thief.

"Fu@k this bike... i am out of here" is something akin to what i imagened happening after he fell flat on his face two feet from my van. Probably being watched by a car pulling into the car park.

So the moral of the story is being fit pays off even if you're a thief.

Tell your story to Berk and maybe he'll have a laugh and give you a good deal on a replacement

Actually a dila saddle is on the way (ordered prior). But i plan to tell darimo as i am sure they would have a laugh.

I just wish i could see the security footage. It would be classic i am sure.
