What I was getting at RE: the Italians is their reputation for poor QC and poor tolerances. It's quite possible you are both right and simply have tyres from different batches
Italians design really great stuff, but their manufacturing (and warranty/support) falls short. I include Campagnolo in this (lately). Some of their stuff I bought in the last few years the finish was absolutely dog-awful and it got sent back.
