After acquiring both of these, TL-FC24 and TL-FC25 appear to be exactly the same.

Wots going on 'ere then?

Thanks.

A pointless update to the name?

Are you buying tools based on the model number alone? Have or don't have? :D

Both are adapters that require you to use the TL-FC25.
The TL-FC24 is for use on SM BB9000 and SM B93. AKA Dura Ace and XTR bottom brackets.
The TL-FC25 is for use on SM-BBR60 BB-MT800. AKA Ultegra/105 or XT bottom brackets.

Are you really sure it's the same? Shimano claims TL-FC24 is for DA and TL-FC25 is for Ultegra and below. The notches of DA BB Cups actually seems a tad finer.

Dura-Ace/XTR cups are 42mm in diameter. Ultegra/XT cups are 44mm. Most other threaded BB are 46mm. As the adapters are included 42mm and 44mm BBs, I doubt anyone ever needs to buy these individually.

Dura-Ace/XTR always includes adapter, but XT (and may be Ultegra) sometime sold without adapter
