A sick part of me always wanted to strip my bike (always overridden), but how do they hold up long term? Any discoloration? I know some seem to use wax with uv protecton.

Hi,

I've come to a point where any additional weight saving come at a very expensive price. :/ I've taken my 2012 Cervélo R3 Team from 7,15 to 6,60 kgs simply by changing/upgrading to commonly avalible parts.

I was wondering roughly how much weight could be saved by stripping the frame and fork from paint?

Is it safe to ride a nude carbon bike or will UV-rays negatively affect the carbon and epoxy composite?

What would be the best way to do the decals? A stencil and draw in the letters with a marker or to use vinyl?

What kind of clearcoat would you recommend?
You can buy the decals:

The answer to both questions probably depend on your capabilities. I've sprayed 2 frames, neither particularly well so ended up getting a professional to do it.

Removing the paintwork resulted in a weight loss of 156 grams!!

It has a funky metallic sheen just like the graphite tip of a pencil.

Can I claim this is a Weight Weenie-bike now?

Great tip! - I used some 303 and it came out great, giving the entire frame a clean glossy finish! :)

Nice! I did similar with my Supersix.

I only moved to blades near the end - sanding was very time consuming and messy. When I thought I was done, there were still some patches of black paint (primer?). I did some more fine wet sanding (800-1500) to get rid of those patches and make sure the finish was to my satisfaction.

Just get some nice decals, unless you want to send your bike away for painting.

Wow, I'd really love to do this. I've got 10 days coming up when I will be unable to ride my bike so it's a perfect time.

Just worried that I'll totally screw it up. I'm not the handiest of handies. :?

If I could do it using nothing but a folding knife, I think you can too!

The paint is soft and the carbon epoxy composite is hard, so scraping the paint off is surprisingly easy.

6.5 kg. 14.3 pounds. Yes. You're illegal according to the UCI.

The part that scares me a little is tearing down all the components then reassembling.
