Lightweight thru axle - Extralite?
Moderator: robbosmans
Hi all,
I would like to change my axles with levers for some lightweight ones.
Proper size are DT Swiss Plug In RWS, which I consider a safe choice.
Another 20g i can save with Extralite Black Lock axles. Is it a safe choice or do I compromise on stiffness or something? They have a brass washer and 6mm hex key, which is good for durability, but the axle itself is obviously more butted than DT..
As always with weightweenie parts, I dont know if the weight saving comes from better material, more labour costly production or at the expense of going on the edge..
Another options are somewhere between Extralite and DT Swiss with weight - Cruel Components - I find 6mm hex key better solution for tightening than 25mm torx. Carbon Ti doesn't make proper size right now and they use only 5mm hex, i have heard couple of people destroyed the mounting hole..Shift Up has no correct size for me.
Robert Axle and other producers are about the same weight as DT Swiss.
I am 80 kgs so not exactly lightweight.
Thanks!

Do they have any that are compatible with the Mavic Speed Release system? I was looking to replace the thru axles on my Cannondale. The only suitable replacement I've found so far is Robert Axle Project.
Surprisingly, they’re all pretty light, even the heavy looking ones. You don’t see any $5 TAs on the market, they’re all $35+ for a bolt that’s been hollowed out and contoured.
I’ve got Extralite axels front and rear on my S5D.
M12x1.5 front - 125mm
M12x1.75 Maxle rear - 176mm
Really rate them and saved a shed load of weight over the standard RAT system.

Why would a lightweight thru axel cause your pads to rub on your disc? My bike is set up perfectly and makes no noise.
