Anyone running their Madone SLR's with TL 28mm's?
Moderator: robbosmans
I have a 2019 Madone SLR rim brake currently with 25mm Conti 5000 clinchers. I'm thinking of trying the 28mm Conti 5000 TL's for replacement. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the bigger 28's? Thanks!

The big disadvantage is you need properly wide rims (think 30mm) to get the best aerodynamic performance out of those tires. The advantages are you can run lower pressures...you'll be less likely to puncture when running over debris, you'll be more comfy.

Tyre pressure and rolling resistance
“It is true that the higher the inflation pressure, the lower the rolling resistance of the tyre,” Schwalbe UK’s Dave Taylor says. “It’s also worth pointing out that a tyre’s susceptibility to punctures is lower with high pressures, too. And if the inflation pressure is continuously too low, premature tyre wear is the result, which usually means cracking of the sidewall and unnecessarily high abrasion.”

I recently switched from 25 to 28’s. The comfort benefit is obvious to me, but leaning hard into corners is definitely better. I’m sure it has much to do with my confidence as opposed to anything scientific. But it’s just better whether I’m on a mediocre tire or a decent tire.
I won’t be going back to 25’s.

My friend is running his madone (rim brake) with 28C gp5000 tires on a wide rim. The tires blow up to 32mm at their widest point. They actually fit the bike but with little clearance. The front wheel has less clearance than the rear.
The largest tire you can fit will depend on your inner rim width, tire kind and size.
A 32c tire could be fine on a narrow rim while a 28c could rub on a wide rim. Be careful.
Vittoria tires measure small (25c = 24mm on my wheel) and continental measure big (23c = 25mm on my wheel).
