The geo for a 2020 SS is practically the same as 2019 Synapse. So if you want a race bike, go 2019. If you want a boat, go 2020.
I don't get this. Either you can get your fit or you can't. Stack of 574mm on a size 56. That should work nicely for your average 6 foot (183 cm) cyclist. Plenty of bar drop available if needed. Are you saying the new model is no good as a race bike?

Thanks a lot for you comments, appreciated. Would also be interesting to hear your thoughts on stiffness and comfort.
I've ridden several 300k rides on my CAAD12, so comfort should not be an issue.
I would guess that the SSE HM is stiffer than the 2020? Has anyone seen figures or claims from Cannondale?
The comfort issue won't have much to do with frame stiffness. There's a study somewhere - tires account for about 10 times as much compliance as seatpost, and seatpost accounts for about 10 times as much compliance as the frame. I am sure my numbers are off but you get the point. The 2020 model has room for bigger tires and the design leaves a lot more seat post exposed. The two details suggest the new model has the potential to be more comfortable depending on setup and tire selection and pressure. The frame itself may stiffer as well - safe to assume it is.

My vote goes for the newer model. Just more future proof. There is the risk of feeling "out of date" on the older model in a few years time (if you care about such things).

This was addressed on another thread- here is a quick comparison of geos for the 51cm Evo vs Synapse:

2020 51cm EVO HM vs. 2019 51cm Synapse HM

Top Tube: 52.8 / 53.1
Head Tube: 13.0 / 13.7
Front/Center: 59.7 / 59.6
Wheelbase: 99.4 / 99.4
Stack: 53.4 / 55.0
Reach: 37.8 / 37.7

The wheelbase alone is 200mm longer than previous 52cm evo.

I’m not going to comment on whether or not it’s a good race bike. If you’re looking for something low and aggressive then look elsewhere.

The more important thing is, both Synapse and SS EVO have low and appropriate trail value for race bike (around 58mm), unlike most endurance bike which set trail value at 62mm or higher. Small 20mm (not 200mm) difference in wheelbase has way less influence on handling response than 4mm+ trail value difference separate between endurance bike and race bike. Actually, BMC TimeMachine Road has 62mm trail value for all sizes. It handle more like an endurance bike than a Synapse.

I've ridden an SS 2019 (size 52 non HiMod) during one week in Gran Canaria. I currently own a SS 2020 HiMod in size 54. I didn't ride the two bikes back to back, but there are some obivous differences.

THe SS 2020 is defnitely more comfortable. Espacially the compliance at the back is way improved, it's something which I noticed immidiatly and still notice when riding on a bad surface. Both bikes were on 25mm tires, so the comfort can be attributed to the frame. The differences in the frontend comfort are less pronounced, but I give the edge to the SS 2020.

Stiffness is also very similar: both are stiff and direct.

The new trail geo of the SS2020 for the sizes 51-54, takes a bit getting used to. It's not dull and it certainly doesn't ride like a boat, but it requires a different riding style then I'm used to. It's hyper precise and point & shoot, but it requires a bit more rider input (or weight shift of the body) to push it in a corner. Ounce it's cornering, it's very stable and fluent and a real joy to ride. I rate both equaly fun.

So comfort is the biggest difference I guess, the SS2020 is also a bit more future proof especially in the disc version (thru axle).

But in the end, choose the one you like the most. Both are good bikes.

Having spent a good amount of time on the 51cm Synapse, and then compared it directly to a 2020 52cm EVO - I will 100% agree with the statement that the geometry and overall feel of the bike is 100% the same. My 51cm Synapse (latest generation, Hi-Mod Disc) weigh's about 6.2kg. I think I would have a difficult time making a 2020 EVO disc weigh the same without shelling out a considerable amount of coin to spec it out carefully.... I liked the 2020 EVO, but I like my Synapse more. FWIW - My synapse is run with the stem slammed, and nearly a full extension on the seatpost. The wheelbase is CONSIDERABLY longer than the previous generation EVO, as mentioned above. If I was buying a 'race' bike today - I'd chose a 2018/2019 SS EVO HM (rim - which can be found for a GREAT deal) as, at least to me - it feels by far 'faster' uphill than either the MY2020 EVO or the latest Synapse. BUT - if I had to choose between all 3 models and could only keep one - It would be my Synapse. Because it's incredibly hard to overlook the clearance for 32mm tires, the very low chassis weight, and overall comfort that the SAVE stays and 25.4mm post provide. The bike is not a traditional 'endurance' bike, it feels more like a very slightly more upright version of the previous generation EVO. But hey, that's just my .02 ;)

Not the best pic - but you get the idea.

16mm stack difference is quite a bit I think. I got a Evo slammed with a regular -6 Hyperstem, would have had to go -17 stem or so on a Synapse and the Evo feels aero which is why I did choose it over a Synapse in the first place coming from a Specialized Venge 2019.

Short of which one gets you to your ideal fit, which if you’re already happy with the CAAD12 then the 2019 should be almost exactly the same, do you prefer the simple looks of a traditional small diameter tube road bike or do you want something aero?

If you’re already comfortable doing long distances on the CAAD either should be an upgrade regardless. What are you primarily looking to do in terms of types of rides?

I don’t think the OP mentioned, but do you have preference between rim and disk brakes?
