supposing I'm not the only one.........

I have a new Red crank and the large chainrings come with two chain catch pins (offset by 180 degrees). Am going to pull the pin opposite of the arm and have heard SRAM supplied a plug or similar for the hole in the ring. I don't have a suplied plug.

What are masses using (or running w/a hole in the outer ring)?

If you are so fussy about this "hole" you can plug it with Sugru.
I have a set of oval chainrings with two pin placement options, as you can turn them 180 degree for different chainring settings (didn't bother to cover it ). What would be the purpose of having 2 pins on regular chainrings?
