You have to do a bit of pocket math here
Assume a rider that weighs 100kg, a 175mm crank arm, and for the ease of it, say a 39T chain ring of say 175mm diameter.
Pins of the chain are approx 3mm in diameter, and let's be boring and say the load bearing part of the pins is 3mm wide.

100kg is approx. 1kN, which is doubled by the lever as the chain is being pulled at approx. half way out the crank arm, so 2kN.
The weight of the rider has no direct relationship with the force they are putting through the crank, because they are never standing statically on it.

A quick bit of work tells me that a rider (of any weight) doing 500W at 90RPM is putting an average of 33kg through the whole pedal stroke.

I think.

I'll see if I can get around to do that.
Where would you place such a topic here?
I'm not super familiar with the WW forum.
Yeah I'm interested in what kind of EP additives you use and how much. So go ahead and create a separate "home-made chain lube" thread somewhere, for example in the suggested Cycle Chat or even here.

You have to keep in mind, that we're looking for the worst case scenario, plus I tried to simplify this, as it makes no sense to go to the last two digits.
I'm well aware, that the worst case scenario is technically worse, than the moment where a 100kg rider is pushing the pedal, with the cranks at 3 o'clock.
It could be a heavy rider with loads of power, in the above scenario, but pulling with the other leg as well, and pulling on the bars.
It was simply a matter of explaining that the load per mm2 is much higher than people expect, and why EP additives makes sense.

The average is of little interest in this case, as the lube has to deal with the max load.

The official how to make lube and how to use it thread, so we don't disturb the Silca brand.

I've accumulated a whole bunch of Silca stuff over the last 3 yrs. The Super Pista pump. The smaller saddle bag. The new wipes. The valve extenders. The apron. The T-handle wrenches and the Ti-Torque wrench.

Some of it's really good. Some of it's frustrating. The pump was an early model. So it's had its share of issues. Gaskets that corrode and fail. A difficult to remove top cap. The smaller saddle bag doesn't stay clasped well when things jostle in the bag. The rubber on the valve extenders often misses the carbon rim, still rattle, and the rubber manages to break down.

But...I'll keep buying more. Why?

Silca's pushing the innovation curve in cycling accessories. When you're doing that your v1 products are likely to have defects / issues. You're going to have to charge more if you're not venture funded and need to be cash flow positive. And the gestalt of the products is great. It's the "bugs" that are getting them.

Importantly, I've found their customer service to be totally top notch. Any issue I've had, they've addressed.

Net - I want to support innovation. Hardware is hard. And innovation is really hard. You just need to go in knowing that.

@sethjs

1000%

However, I love all my Silca and haven't had any issues.. That said I would love a SEAT ROLL PREMIO designed to carry Ti-Torque wrench..

That is a great point about their SC... they gave everyone who backed the Ti-Torque wrench a discount on V2...

Josh is doing things that nobody else has done and he is doing a great job!!!! If you like it or not.. Silca is pushing the industry to make better products and that is good for everyone...

Exempt the people that unwillingly gets to sponsor their R&D, through receiving useless products that should never have shipped.
I fail to see why anyone would try to justify, shipping out products that are simply not finished, or plain bad quality?

You'd have a good laugh if you saw what I received from their "customer service"

I may have to burst your bubble, regarding innovation. I happen to live from exactly that, and what Silca is doing, generally has little to do with innovation as such.
Take a track pump. There's really very little you can do there, unless you make changes for the sake of changes.
What you can do, is upping the quality, which is what Silca claims to have done, and that rather loud.
In reality, they made a polished turd, where anything you can't see from the outside, is kept to the lowest possible quality.
Try take a look at why their SuperPista Ultimate pumps, bind at the top of the stroke?
Cause the piston ring is 0.8mm too small, and the rod bearing suffers a similar issue.
Why did they make it like that?
Cause it's cheap, real cheap!

@MrMagura, I get that you have issue with Silca. I believe every post you make mentions that. It's really getting old reading the same thing. Not every business can satisfy clients. I too own a business and I go out of my way to make everyone happy. I think I can say for most of the posters, we get that you are unhappy and there is no reason to keep spelling it out for us.

There is not one company in the world that does not make a product that a client has problems with. Boeing makes pretty good planes but they too have a huge issue right now. Tesla makes a few clunkers too. Microsoft? How amout every Cellphone company in the world? How about the folding phone? So I would think its normal that Silca makes a few blunders and wish they did more R&D.

I could say the same, it's getting old to hear people, trying to justify silca screwing over people.
If you think it's oooh so acceptable to screw people over, why don't you just hand me the $450 Silca screwed me over for?
Or it's only ok when it wasn't you that got screwed over?

Making things as cheap as possible, is hardly a blunder!
Customer service that tries to convince that any quality issue is "user error", is also hard to pass off as a blunder.

Not to derail the "how to lube or wax a chain" thread, but I'm curious about their (pricey) handlebar tape. So if anyone has experience with that, I'd love to hear (new Shimano PRO bars suprisingly have a bladed shape in the drops). Similar about their race bag, though I see that's currently out of stock, so I'd also be open to what's your favorite race-day bag (preferably great for air travel, too).

Still have not had bad experience with their stuff yet. Bit pricey, but they have media sample sales every once in a while. Some online retailer also do discount on their stuff sometimes too. The new bar tape looks interesting.
