Hi, newbie here trying to build a disc road bike with Camagnolo Record. Has anyone tried building with TRP Spyre disc brakes? My frame is a post mount and I want to stay with cable pull disc setup.

You would be a lot better off to go with Record Hydro and Hope RX4's - they work great.

Pull ratio is different. The Spyre are set up for Shimano. I did use them for two years you just need to set them up perfect. You will still get a lot of lever pull.

i do it with 10-speed levers
it works
pads have to be very close to the rotors
and the rotors have to be perfectly true
i descend some STEEP hills on gravel
there's a couple things to get the best braking action
do not pre-load the actuating lever. leave it fully retracted
use the pad set screws to take up the space

get the regular Spyres. the SLC will shred the brake cable
i've also heard that the stock pads aren't good.
but i don't know anything about pad material, or manufacturers
that's my next step

the HY/RD on the other had, has a very easy hack to get the proper pull ratio
there's also a guy who makes an adapter

juin tech / yokozuna make a campy-compatible(ish) mech/hydro caliper

Thanks for quick responses guys. I called TRP and even they didn’t recommend using Spyres with Campy but when I search online, people have done it. Haven’t found anyone who has done it with a Record 12 though. I am guessing the pull is the same for all Campys. I am not too keen on running hydos or the TRP hydro setup. I am considering the Spyres, not the SLC.

Have you looked at Juin Tech Calipers? They work a lot better than Spyres if you don't want to use Record Hydro Levers.

I've had Everything and I'm a big guy at over 100KG so good brakes are important to me:

Ranked in terms of Braking Performance (Worst to Best) - I've had them all

Campy with Spyres
Campy with HyRoad
Campy with Juin Tech
SRAM Hydro
Shimano Hydro
TRP Hylex RS
Campy Hydro with RX4's
Campy Hydro - Far and above better than anything

Campy Hydro with RX4's are pretty good - but if that doesn't work I would really suggest Juin Tech

Whatever you do if you are going to use Record Mechanical levers use Non-Compressable Outer Liners - it really helps even with the Quasi Hydro set-ups.

Thanks for the advice Morrisond. It’s not that I don’t want to use Canpy hydro, they don’t make a post mount and my frame is a post mount. I have read that I can use the hydro levers but with a Magura calipers. So, to avoid complications, I was thinking of sticking to purely cable pulled discs. Looks like there is no easy answer per say.

If you have post mount get the RX4, mine are brilliant.

Avid BB7 road are going to be the simplest and cheapest, if not the most convenient or best, brake to set up. I say this as the guy who makes the HY/RD short pull adapter.

If you get the Shimano RX4 Post Mount Calipers - you will have all the parts you need between what comes with Campy Hydro and the RX4's. However the bleeding is a little different as I think you will need a Shimano bleed syringe for the bottom and Campy for the top. You use Campy fluid. Lots of info on this site for Bleeding.

Hope says this combination works scroll down and you will see they say works with Campy.

I've had mine on my bike for 18 months 4-5,000km and haven't had to touch them.

Thanks again guys.
Morrisond, are you running record 12 with hope rx4 post mounts? What rotors are you using? Will the Rx4s work with 140mm centelock rotors?
Sorry for the dumb questions, this is the very first bike I am building and as you can see I come here with zero knowledge.

If you want to use cable discs, then the Juin Tech work better with Campag levers than the TRP Sypres do.

Thanks joejack
For the Avid calipers, is there a specific road version? Normal or sl? Any specific reason that bb7 is suggested over Spyres?
