The 7800 was officially offered/ shown to tier one OEMs in March 2003, I was there at the closed door event and launched as a 2004 product. I had mine in November 2003.
The 7900 too was shown in March / June 2007. The first sets of 7900 / 7970 were shipped in late October 2008.
As far as I was aware, the 9000 and 9100 folowed almost an exact schedule.

They should be showing the newest groupset behind closed doors at Taipei right now. Expect announcement sometime in April, test review samples / pictures in June or at the Tour. Item released as a 2020 product.

I'm afraid you're mistaken. R9100 was media launched in June 2016, with availability in early 2017. R9000 was media launched in June 2012 with extremely limited late 2012 availability, widespread in early 2013.

That's the timeline I recall too. I recall 7900 prototypes still being tested in the pro peloton in the spring and summer of 2008. I jumped on 7970 as soon as it was available and it was July 2009 when I got it.

What makes you think that Shimano is going to do anything other than their typical 4 year update cycle for Dura Ace?

Becaue waiting two years to catch up to the other company's 12-speed gruppos is not in their economic self-interest.

Shimano waited four years to match Campy's move to 11sp.

No way in hell. It would be suicide to not do mechanical anymore. Campy's newly released 12 speed group was mechanical first. Lot of folk want bikes, not computerized toys that need software updates, power sources and crap. It would be sweet if their new mechanical DA could shift up like 5 at a time in one sweep and down more than one.

I don’t know where you heard it from but Shimano is not stopping mechanical at least in the next generation.

What’s about to be launched is neither DA nor Ultegra.

In seriousness, I don't think Shimano has any inclination to bend to the Campagnolo or SRAM's advancements. The current and former 11-speed stuff is great, and it certainly isn't keeping their sponsored teams from winning major races. Shimano hasn't adopted CF cranks (other than a limited batch of 7800 cranks), and that technology has been around for years on other competitors.

One area where lack of gears does make a difference is in the off-road setting. Now that SRAM has moved to 12-speed on their mountain bike offerings (mechanical and electronic), Shimano is on their heels, with only XTR announced, but not really available. XT has to make an appearance, soon.

Further, where Shimano owns the road and SRAM controls the mountain bike world, no one has become the clear winner in the next battle ground: gravel. That's a wide open field (and one where the aforementioned 105 Di2 would make a lot of sense).

If you read closely what I wrote, you would realise that its just like what was scheduled with the 7800 and 7900.
The 9000 and 9100 were following approximately the same timeline in their release.

I did read closely what you wrote. If you re-read what you wrote, specifically the part I've highlighted in bold, you'll see why I'm saying you are mistaken. The schedule of R9000/R9100 was a whole year later than you are describing.

If Shimano follows the timeline of R9000 or R9100 then R9200 will be announced in June 2020 and released for the 2021 model year, with maybe a small amount available in Dec 2020, widespread delivery in early 2021.
