Cyclocross, in general, is about riding the wrong bike for the conditions.

Saw the new Sagan Tarmac and Venge framesets on one of our local shops' website. It's SEVEN GRAND for a Tarmac and TEN GRAND for a Venge. Those are framesets, not complete bikes!

The top of the line Treks are now a grand shy of TWENTY GRAND!

That's the price of a full-on Superbike with 200 hp, traction control, ABS, and world superbike level electronic aids, and often even electronically controlled suspension.

To out things into perspective, my luxury SUV only cost five times the price of a Sagan Venge frameset. This is a truck with an engine and drivetrain that can be expected to survive for a solid 20 years or several hundreds of thousands of miles, with all the niceties... not a flimsy bicycle that can be turned into a pile of scraps by way of any minor incident.

For those in the industry, I struggle to understand the economics of this? Are there really that many buyers of 15-20 grand bicycles out there that mere mortals must now forget about ever owning top of the line products?
First of all:

You own a luxury SUV and you complain about prices of a luxury bike/frame?

Second:

Rule #25 // The bikes on top of your car should be worth more than the car.
Or at least be relatively more expensive. Basically, if you’re putting your Huffy on your Rolls, you’re in trouble, mister. Remember what Sean Said.

Third:

You need to devide the number of $$ spent on your bike with the number of km you ride on that bike. If you spend $ 20.000 on your bike, and you ride it for 200.000 km, then it's a very good deal. But you don't, and that's the real problem.

An s-works with a cool paint is not a luxury item. It is just a generic made in China frame plus a couple of hours work for the company's graphic designer.

People spend $50k on an SUV that does nothing but carry them around. Some of those people want to spend a quarter as much on a machine that will help them be healthy, happy, and strong. If bikes were $50k I'd still buy them.

If you compare the price between a Sagan frame and a fully custom Crumpton, Moots, or any high end frame maker I just cannot see any reason to go with Specialized..... What ever makes you happy and can afford is what you should get! :-)

I don't understand where he is seeing these prices unless its in non US currency. They are priced about the same as the normal S-Works models in the US. That isn't to say bike pricing isn't out of control, but that these are selling for the same as any other Specialized.

That's it. The rant isn't so much about these framesets in particular; they simply showed the extent to which bike pricing is out of control.

Sounds about right OP. I'm selling my RSV4 to pay for my cycling addiction lol

Having said that, change bike shops. Those prices are way higher than specializes sells them for.

For reference, here in Canada, the regular S-Works Venge and regular Tarmac are $15.3k and $13.7K, respectively. Is the Venge really only half that in the US???
The topic the OP started was framesets, not complete bikes.

I definitely agree here. Performance machine-yes but nothing close to luxury. I can't help but imagine the insane profit margin on something like this. At least they back it with a solid warranty compared to some of our favorite Italian brands.

That makes perfect sense. Everybody knows that because framesets are ludicrously expensive, complete bikes are therefore cheaper. !?!

Controversial opinion here:

$10,000 really isn't a lot of money to some people. I know a guy who spent over $30,000 on bikes last year, but he makes over $1 million a year and has been for over a decade. Obviously bike companies know such people exist (rich and obsessed with bikes) so they charge these kind of prices.

I recall less than 100 of the Sagan bikes are being made, so I disagree that these aren't luxury items. In my riding circle, we basically do decent mid-range efforts, but with the cafe/brunch scene and socializing afterwards the priority, and we spend most of our time talking about gear, so we do appreciate seeing the special and rarer builds. It's almost like a car meet for us.

And if you don't like the price, you can simply buy a 105/Sora equipped entry level frame. Those can still be had for reasonable prices. It's only the high-end that has really gone bonkers. The entry level bikes today are light years ahead of what pros were riding on in the 2000s, and those guys were still going much faster than even the pros today.

So just my opinion, but a lot of this sounds like, some people being upset that they are being priced out of the "high-end" market. It has become more exclusive sure, and maybe people don't like the fact that the market has become exclusionary in a way. But at the end of the day, it's not like any of us need the latest high-end bikes for performance reasons, it's to show off and makes us feel special that we have a bike that few can afford to have.

And for whatever it's worth, if I could get an allocation for the white rainbow Sagan edition, I would buy it in a heartbeat. But that's because I am a big Sagan fan. I also would have loved to get my hands on this, if they had offered it to the public:
