I have mechanical DA 9100 with an 11-30 cassette. I’ve been thinking I’d pick up an ultegra 11-34 to go a bit lower. But before I do that I thought I’d see if anyone has tried to use the XTR 11-40 CS-M9000 with this DA group. I happen to have a slightly used XTR cassette already, just sitting around gathering dust.

Has anyone tried the XTR cassette? What did you find?

you will need a roadlink to fit 40t, but 40t on a road double is abit excessive

The Ultegra GS is better suited because it has a longer cage. That way if you accidently shift into the big-big combo you won't rip off your RD and possibly damage your frame. With the GS you won't need a RoadLink. I'm running the GS along with an XT 11-40 on my tandem. No RoadLink is needed and shifting is perfect. Can run both small-small and big-big gear combos no problems.

Yeah, good point. The 40 might be lower than I need.

Thanks for the quick response! I think if I get the 11-34 it would probably be a good idea to also get the log cage ultegra derailleur, although the shop tells me the short DA derailleur will be fine up to 34.

Different frames have slightly different derailleur mounts so your results may vary but on most bikes 9100 needs the Roadlink while 8000 GS works stock. That's how we do it at Santana Tandems.

The 30t is well suited for that RD. Just as a 34t is well suited for an r8000gs mid cage. When you deviate you sacrifice shift quality by the size of the deviation. (regardless of the chainwrap or cog clearance being sufficient).

You mean an Ultegra takes a 40 without a hanger extender? Then would the 8050 Di2 GS also have the same capability?

The op should look into getting an 11-34t + gs derailleur and swap the crank for an adventure crank like 46/30t.

Then shift quality is preserved.

If you try to put a 40t you wont be able to shift to the 10th cog from the 11th, the chain will just be rattling forever. The cassette to guide pulley distance is too large at the small cogs and if you try to decrease it you'll grind the pulley against the 1st cog.

On sram 10s (and some 11s) it's possible to mix mtb derailleurs with road shifters. Then you can put 42t cassettes and so on. The derailleur is then designed for the cassette.

I would suggest you buy or borrow the cassette you want to use and try it before you splash your cash on a new rear derailleur. I can run an 11-34 using an 6870 short cage mech. It is all dependant on the combination of chain stay and rear hanger dimensions as to whether or not you can get that combination of both chain length and tension to run without issues. In my case I am on a 2010 TCR Adv SL size M/L and due to pure luck in the dimensional maths,it works, even large-large is able to cope without damage if I were to accidentally hit the wrong shifter. I only use this combo as I live in an incredibly hilly location and this allows me to have a super easy day without staying on the turbo.

Yes, that's the most common spec at Santana. But since frames differ slightly I can't guarantee it on your frame.

The RX805 (clutched ultegra) can take a 42t... 44t is kinda noisey.. I think it just touches the pulley

Youre better off with a 46-32 crank instead.

I hadn't considered the clutch derailleur so I looked it up. According to shimano it has the same specs as the regular Ultegra GS: 39T capacity, 34T max low sprocket.

I would assume they are the same other than the clutch. Anyone know differently?
