Running DA 9070 but looking to hear down slightly from 53x39 for a trip to the Alps in the summer.

To save cost, I'm thinking of trying to swap the 39 out for a 36 on the Shimano 4 bolt 110 BCD chainset, and switching the cassette up to 11-28 (or 12-28).

Shimano speccs the front mech 16t max capacity, so technically, im a tooth too big on the 53x36 at 17t.

Real world experience, is this likely to be an issue?

i ran 53/36 and 11-28 with my dura ace 9000 set-up for about 4,000 miles.

no issues!

I run 53x36 on a 9070 front mech and there's no issues, Romain Bardet used this combo in the Tour last year as well (along with an 11x30 block too!)

Several of my friends swapped their 52-36 to 52-34, so that is an 18 tooth jump and they reported no issues.

Chalk me up as a devoted 52-34 user, so I can't see how 53-36 wouldn't work at least as well.
