Used DA7900 or New 105 7000... Same price... What to do...

So I'm short 1 groupset for the current number of frames I have. Looking at options for either used 7900 (~2000g) or new 105 7000 (~2400g).

Assuming the same money, is the 7900 performance good enough to warrant the weight savings?

I have 7970, the Di2 version of manual 7900. I think it works very well. Perfectly you might say. The only downside, sort of, is that it is 10 speed and the new standard is 11 speed. And has been for about 5-7 years or so now. Its sort of like buying a 20 year old Corvette or a new Camaro. Technologically, the new Camaro is better. And probably performance wise too. But the old Corvette is still better than any Camaro. Old Dura Ace is better than new 105 or new Ultegra. That's just the way it is no matter how much you try to talk about how great your inferior groupset is.

Didn't people use to complain about 7900 shift quality (vs 7800)? Which they more or less fixed with 9000, and R7000 shifts almost as good as 9100?

Yes that is correct. I have 7900 on one bike and it's pretty good but not as good as the 9xxx series. Rear is as good but the front needs a firm puush for sure. Not as smooth as the later stuff but not a rear issue either

I'd go new 105, it's superb. Used groupsets, are always a gamble. 7900 was the worst looking Dura Ace imo.

I also think that 7900 was the worst shifting Dura Ace in the last 20 years.

Go with 105.

Yep, I had 7900 on a rental this summer, really unimpressive. I'd even go 6800 over it.

7900 is for me not great, based around what i bought in 2012. front shifting was average, rear shifting and indexing is not as good as modern kit, and it went out of index more frequently than anything before or since. i'd go 105 over this.. the new 7000 is leagues better though obviously a little heavier.
