Are you greasing or oiling the inside of the housing?

My second question is about the cable being used. Is everyone running powercordz with this housing, or is it ok to use regular SS cable?

Also, how long do these usually last? I assume they are like the old school BMX plastic housing, and will last a while if you keep the cables lubed up.

For the back story on this housing, I read in a thread that this Tune MTB housing was some of the lightest cable housing you can get. I bought mine from an eBay seller in Germany. It was like 18$ with shipping for 5 pieces.

The housing is a two part with the white inner part being the desirable of the two. I took a Allen key and hammered out the inside piece from the outside.

I’m planning on replacing my brake and shifter housing with this stuff during one of the long holiday weekends. I’m curious how much weight can be saved over the regular steel lined Shimano and Jagwire housing I have now.

It should make for a cheap experiment if it doesn’t work out.

Anyone who has used this stuff please give me some idea of how often you have to replace it, and any issues you have had with it. Thanks

I just run standard Campag steel cables through mine. Not lubing the inside. Five pieces with the outer removed weighed 27grams, uncut. I'm thinking of going to KCNC ti cables in the future maybe

I keep waiting to here what the downside of this housing is. It’s light, cheap, and sounds like it’s decently durable. I’m surprised it’s not more popular.

What's the weight per meter? Can it be used for both shifting and braking?

It can be used for shift and brake. Each piece is 48cm in length so multiply that by 5 which is the number of pieces sold. With the plastic outer removed each piece weighs 5.5gm so 27.5gm for 240cm. 13.75gm for 120cm so take a bit more off for 1 meter.

That's a great weight. Nearly 10gr/m.

If you feel the need to lube I suggest to use a little chain wax lube. And always use stainless steel cables. Preferably without coating.

To post an update about these Tune cable outers, I installed them today on my bike. I changed out the shifter and brake housing.

The shifter housing was Shimano and I lost 27.4 grams switching to the Tune housing.

The brake housing was Jagwire and I lost 49.3 grams switching to the Tune housing.

So a total of 76.7 grams lost.

The brakes seems to work like normal, but the RD was a little tough to get dialed in. It seemed like the housing had to get fully inserted into the shifter and cable stops. I imagine it will need another slight tweak after I ride the bike more.

I’m still using regular SS steel cables for both brakes and shifters, but I might change that out the either powercordz or the KCNC Ti cables in the future.

Mine were around 12 grams per piece (48cm) with the outer included.

I think the problem with using them with the outer still intact is two fold. One, they are very rigid. Two, they are too thick. 6mm thick with the outer installed, and 4mm thick with the outer removed.

Maybe blacken it with a paint pen? I wouldn't put white housing on a stealth bike, but the g/m ratio is two times better than Jagwire XEX-SL (~21g/m), so another small 10g gain to consider. Wish there was a Shimano-compatible hydraulic line so light.

Really want to go for the light white plastic housing
are there any know issues with them? Ofcourse they will not last that long..

I wasn't really a fan of them and changed back to conventional brake housing. Modulation was not to my liking
