Disc brakes have been highly refined on mountain bikes for how long now? And how many times, before the proliferation of discs on road bikes, did you hear your buddies say, "golly, I sure wish I could get those brakes on my road bike"?

25 times, maybe more... :noidea:
In the mountains, for heavy riders there are benefits, especially in the wet - but that's just not the major part of the customers. Here, with 70kg in the flats, I would only carry around useless weight. And no, in general your brake system doesn't have a noticable effect on you ascending and descending abilities. But last year the pros still had the choice and rode rim brakes in the TdF mountain stages - if it's about the last watts and seconds the choice was clear.

U mean TDF pros do not have choice on brakes this year?

I have both rim and disc brake bikes but hate the sluggishness of the disc brake bike and use the rim brake bike most of the time.

On flats, weight only matters during acceleration. ;)

Also not sure how you can claim that riding mountains isn’t a major target market for road race bikes. In the US if you live anywhere west of the Rocky Mountains, you live near several mountain ranges like the Sierras, Cascades, San Gabriel, Diablo, etc. If you live on either coast really.

The fact that mountains exist and that consolidation is a goal actually supports the move to disc brakes.

Yes that's why I hate the sluggish disc brake bike and doesn't mean that u live in an area with mountains u would be doing mountains all the time, disc brake bikes are dead weight.

Stop trying to bolster your argument by using pro riders as "proof" folks! Pros are descending on closed roads where they often have done a reconnaissance, they don't have to worry about oncoming traffic and can cut across multiple lanes and straighten a line, they don't need to brake as much. They have logistic issues to contend with and pros are just as suseptible to fear of change and being stubborn as anyone. Pros also have to earn their paychecks by performing well in races, marginal gains are actually important beyond just ego. It's nonsense to suggest that pros using rim brakes is somehow proof for consumers not to get disc brakes.

And if you are riding flats, you are not affected by the "useless weight" (which BTW is less weight than an empty coffee mug) except when riding away from a stoplight, but you might be affected more by your weaker brakes when a car pulls out in front of you

Julian Alaphillippe's use of a sluggish disc brake bike somehow didn't prevent him winning the Fleche Wallonne at the top of the Mur de Huy yesterday. Strange.

This is too funny because it'll never end. I remember when i first switched to a road bike from MTB and then hybrid. I asked for disc brakes and everyone everwhere told me i was an idiot. Excerpts might be Volagi. If you'd make it easy, you could have one super light road bike with rim brakes mostly used for nice weather.
Have a serious gravel bike which play double as a road bike.
I can see how people buy that über aero bike, for rocket speed. Then left with the paradox of trying to rid drag and at same time can't eliminate disc rub at 100%.

And then we have just this! When are people going to get it through!?
It doesn't matter if the best guys use rim brake, aero or not bike. They would win no matter what bike.
The bikes are so close anyway so no-one could for sure believe a change of bike would change the outcome....

Your weight of an empty coffee mug to the non pro crowds is mentally like an additional 2 kgs and cause them to lose 2 mph automatically.

maybe, but a win is a win, gap didn't bother him - as quoted earlier in thread, skill and fitness whatever bike.

Not in the average cosumer's mind, the thought of always being just a bit faster with a lighter bike will always be there.
