Is the AER an upgrade or a sideways move(have the 110 installed)?

Sideway,
Weight less with also less rubber seal, however not as lightly sealed as their SlamSet.
AER bearings that come with AER II weight less too, they are aluminum bearing.

If your 110 are not very recent,
the new Hellbender bearings that now come with 110 and Slamset are more durable than your old bearing in 110. It is another upgrade path for durability.

I have the original Aer, 110 and the new SlamSet. I've been riding the Aer since they were out and replaced the Norglide bushing 2 times since. No issues really and especially no complaints at 33g for the headset upper and lowers. I think the Aer II uses aluminium bearings or something but aren't as light as the original. I much prefer the SlamSet to reduce stack height, which is the reason why I sought out the Aer in the first place.
