I've had used mine about 10 times and it has always been at odds with Google. Should I trust the internet or what's before my eyes? Can it be calibrated?

Check it by weighing something you know the weight of. Compare it to your kitchen scale or bathroom scale. I would bet it's pretty close but not spot on.

i've heard that it is more accurate when the scale is hanging from the top rather than clamped into a stand.

this is certainly true with mine..... things are lighter clamped to a stand.. so I never beleive numbers when I see it used this way.
