I use this stuff I bought a long time ago. I don’t know if it’s still sold. It’s says on the back it contains 35% Teflon. It works great.

You have electrically operated brakes too? And please don’t tell me you have disk brakes.
Just to be obtuse, I could tell you to get eTap hydro using the rim brake version. Then you will never need to deal with cables again!

Okay, I won't tell you I have disc brakes.

For Shimano set ups I use transfil stainless cables and some Rock n roll cable magic. That's stays slick. Transfil cables are cheap too. The only other stainless cables that are better are campagnolo.

Jagwire are equally good but more pricey do pointless over the transfil.

I personally think: campy cableset (can be bought for 28euros from rosebikes. Subscribe to their newsletter, you get a 10 euro voucher, and they ship free on orders above 100euros, so, you can save a lot...) and for that 28 euros, you get full length outer and inner cables, with end caps..

As far as I know, campag-derailer cables just work fine with shimano. And the recent (post09) campag levers use 4.1mm diameter outer cables, so no compatibility issue there neither.

I assume you meant Rock N Roll, because nobody wants to end up RickRoll'd.

Inners: Optislick + a small amount of Shimano cable grease.

Outers - any: Shimano, Sram, Jagwire
Can you describe this grease a bit? Is it low viscosity? Odor? What do you think it is?

Thanks
White, quite thin, no odor - probably teflon-based?

Thank you everyone.

I think I'll try a few drops of homemade paraffin wax chain lube on the cable before installing it. Lets see how it goes. It's quite soft and smears a bit but it's not runny at room temperatures.

I really need a solution for cable installs as I'm doing half a dozen bikes now and don't want to replace cables more often than I need.

I'm thinking that highly polished stainless steel cables with Shimano SP41 grease is the best for overall performance and longevity.

I hope so too MikeD.

I'm curious to hear what longevity shimano optislick users get out there?

How long are these optislick working "adequately" for you?

What's the replacement interval for polished stainless steel cables?
