So i in the market for a direct drive smart trainer.
I can pick up a used gen 1 kickr for 700 usd/ 600 euro or i can get a brand new flux for 660 usd/ 560 euro.

I read loads of horror stories about tacx flux machines having issues with the belt system. But i also read that tacx fixed this issue on later batches, and since i am getting one this late i think i can avoid this issue?

Also noise levels are VERY important to me because i live very close to other students.
Which trainer would you guys go for? or do you have other suggestions?

I've had a batch one fail (almsot immediately on delivery) and a batch two with the revised design fail (after 11 months).

Now using a Neo.

So probably best to avoid the flux even after the redesign?

I think the wahoo gen 1 looks pretty good. Seems like it has a solid track record but just wary about the noise any experience

I have a Kickr1 and of course it's louder then the newer generation but it doesn't bother me.
I put some music on and the noise only gets loud when I go downhill on zwift. I'm a light rider with an ftp of 260, I you push 350w all the time it's probably more annoying.

Have a look at the flux owners group on facebook, see how many posts you have talking about component failure now. Last time i was on there (December 2017, when my second one shit its guts out), you'd have one or two a day.

Yup that is grim. Steering clear of that one. Thanks for the warning :)

What about the direto. more expensive than the kickr gen 1 but seems to be much more quiet.
Cant seem to find any specs on the gen 1 kickr. Anyone know the max gradient, flywheel weight etc..

is the Kickr Core an option? its suppose to be as quiet as the latest Kickr.

I have the Kickr gen1 and its a bit noisy.

It looks really good but it is stretching my budget a bit. I can afford it but i am not sure i am willing to pay so much for a trainer. Unless you guys have seen some place selling the core at a good price in europe. From my searching they all retail for 799 euro

I had three of the later Flux designs. All three broke within 10 hours of use.
Upgraded to a Neo after that.

If you are willing to take a chance and potentially be without a trainer for 2 weeks then go for the flux.
You might get lucky with one that doesn't break.

Have you thought about the new Kickr Core? It's $899, direct drive, silent (like the new Kickr). It's probably what I'd buy today if I hadn't bought a Kickr last year.

Edit: just saw Kode54's post saying basically the same thing...

Same as others. Stretch your budget and get the KICKR Core, or get an Elite Direto.

If noise is an important thing, get the neo. I have had some seriously good workouts on it with a baby sleeping in the room next to it. Babies arent the worlds best sleepers.

Apparently the new Kickr and Kickr Core are even quieter than the Neo.

They are quieter under power, slightly louder when coasting.

That's impressive, most of the noise from my neo is drivetrain and me breathing.
The fan is louder.
