Chorus or Record 12 spd?

Building a new frame with Columbus Spirit tubing and want to show it off a bit.

Thinking Record 12 speed, but Chorus is also a very nice choice and a bit easier on the pocket book.

So, which is it?

This is highly subjective. If you are a real weenie, use the money difference towards lighter seatpost, bars etc. On the other hand, a steel frame is not likely to enter any weenie contest either. Myself I'd rather have an 8kg bike with the new 12 than a 7.7 with the old. It is cool stuff (especially the looks, for me at least) and we want cool for a new bike.

It's a choice for you, it being your money. Obv us forumites want to see 12sp bikes now but no-one is offering to help pay for it so... your call!

I'm a Chorus fan. It has always offered the best bang for the buck in 11 speed. I saw some really good prices on 11 speed Record recently (planet cyclery).

I'd look at the 12 speed gearing. You can only get 11-29 or 11-32 cassettes. Does that appeal to you? I ride a 12-29 so jumping to 12 speed only gives me an 11 toothed cog which isn't a huge advantage for me.

Personally, I do like to stay current so there may be some advantage to have 12 speed 5 years from now when all the groups are 12 speed. But, is that worth an extra $600-800? Only you can decide.

Aesthetically, I still like the older 11 speed groupsets.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that this bike will have an endurance geometry so it will have a compact crank and I'll be opting for an 11-32 for either option.

I was building a bike recently. Went back and forth between the two. I run an 12-29. I don’t need an 11 tooth cog. And I’d rather be able to swap wheels and bikes on my 11 speed direct drive trainer, etc. Having a 12 speed bike didn’t appeal to me.
