But I mean going from 172.5 to 165 is only 0.29 of an inch. How drastic could that honestly be unless you are taking in account the reduced length for when cornering etc.

i suspect it will be a big difference to be honest

im basing that on how different the bike feels if i just adjust the saddle post by a couple of mm

To be blunt, 172.5 to 165 is massive, from a knee joint perspective.
My climbing is better as well, as i have no restrictions to motion at tdc. Even when grinding out in my smallest gear (Which is the only place it would make any appreciable difference)

I've even gone 175 > 165 on my mtb
