DA 9150 - Whats next?

Does anyone know when 9150 will be replaced? Will it be 12 sp? Any other possible changes?

I am starting to put together my dream bike on paper, and am thinking about groupsets. I know I want to give electronic shiffting a try after 6 years on Sram Red 10 sp.

9150 is only about a year old.. arleast another year.. hopefully 2

If anything is to be learned from xtr 12s, if it goes to anything bigger than 11s it'll use a proprietary freehub which would be a big bummer

My observation with shimano cassettes is that they don't like to have large cog size differences between gears. What I mean is that a cassette would go from 1t to 2t spacing earlier on shimano than other brands. So to get that 16/17t cog on a relatively large cassette you would maybe have to look at sram cassettes.

I think it's to ensure shift quality. When 11-17 is available in single tooth spacing and then grows fast to 3-4t spacing, it produces a valley in the middle of the cassette where the upper derailleur pulley has a much larger clearance and thus deteriorates the shift quality there.

So while I think 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,22,25,28,32 is possible it's more likely you will see this from sram rather than shimano.

Any chance of a semi wireless system? I am thinking wireless shifters that talk to a post mounted "battery / contol unit" that has wires to the derailleurs, with a charging port under the seat maybe?

This is not necessarily true. On the MTB side, the benefit of the new Micro Spline Freehub is the ability to run a 10t cog. On the road side we don't really need a top cog that small (though it would be handy.) In fact, my bet is 12-speed road cassettes will be made for both the old 11-speed HG freehub design and the new Micro Spline one.

I'm still fairly new to cycling, if you are doing the 11-32, which means you have hills to climb, wouldn't a 30T be better to reduce that massive 28 to 32T jump.

Mattr is right about the cassette and shifting. When ask to make up an 11-32t

I supply a 11-12-13-15-17-19-21-23-26-29-32t

A 10t-32t cassette for 12 speed would mean a 53/12 gear could be replicated by a 45t outer. In other words 46/30t chainset or 1x with a wider range cassette would be viable.

I have mixed terrain here and I own one wheelset only. I won't change cassette for each ride. That arrangement is the best compromise for my usage.

Shimano traditionally ran Dura Ace on five year product cycles. With the last two, 9000 and 9100, that has shrunk to four years. Assuming they stick with four, and recalling that 9100 was first shown in June 2016 and was 2017 product year, I don't expect to see anything of a new Dura Ace 9200(?) until the late spring/summer of 2020. And it'll be this time in 2021 that the new product will start to become available for purchase with dependable availability.

Friend at Shimano Europe more or less told me don't expect anything until 2020... Campy EPS 12 is due out by Jan 2019...

I've spoken with an lbs who's very close to the distributor and he told me if there were some prospects to change DA, they would offer the current iteration on discount - nothing like that is happening apparently, so he doesn't see a new DA within the next 12 months.

besides 12spd isn't probably that much of a revolution it requires Shimano to act rapidly in fear of sales going rock bottom. cycling industry seems more preoccupied with braking rather than shifting these days, so we might as well wait for that longer than we'd hope for.

it's a bummer, because 12spd makes me need it, and want to have it, and it means popping the Campag cherry, which is both exciting and frightening (...and pricey) at same time

You can easily assume when the next Di2 comes without having any internal sources.

I'd love to see a 1x14 Di2, exclusive to 142OLD, semi-wireless, still electric in a way that the chainring slides between the chainline to keep efficiency, but Shimano is known for being rather conservative, and I doubt rim-brake bikes will have been legacy by the time.

LOL Pop the cherry... Im headed back to Campy EPS.. the only the thing I am really going to miss is the sprint shifters...
