I currently use an Omni Racer 5mm top bearing cover. I have one of the “Slam that stem” 2mm covers that I want to use instead.
The upper bearing itself sits about 1mm proud of the headtube. The compression ring sticks up about 2mm past that. Can I get a shorter compression ring so I can run the shorter bearing cover?
I googled it but didn’t see many options. I assume most headset bearings just come with the comp ring.

I am running the stock FSA bearings that came in my frame. I looked at the Cane Creek Slamset, but the one that fits my bike (IS41/28.6) has a stack of almost 5mm. It’s pretty close to what I have now.

Would getting a shorter bearing and using a regular size compression ring be an option also?

Thanks

Fitting a shallower depth top cap sometimes requires an almighty faff.

A different compression ring will probably sort it, but you might have to go through two or three before you get right one.

How tall is that cover? Looks a little shorter than my 5mm cover.

What compression ring are you using? I would be cool with buying a new upper bearing if it came with a shorter compression ring

Does anyone here use the Cane Creek Slamset headset? The stack height is supposed to be 4.6mm, but I figured maybe I could use their upper bearing with a different cover.

I was reading that the Slam that stem covers were made for the Caad. So what makes their upper bearing lower than any other bike?

Here is my current bearing and compression ring. And how it sits in the bike. The bearing is just slightly proud of the frame. The ring sticks out a few mm

Hey thanks for the info. I just bought one of them.

Also bought an FSA upper that is supposed to be lower. I’ll measure everything and post what I find.

Just a quick update in case anyone is searching for an answer to this in the future. I bought a Cane Creek 40 compression ring that is much lower than my stock ring. It let me use the “Slam that stem” bearing cover and made the gap between the cover and the frame just slightly more than a papers thickness.

The color of the cover is not the same red that is on the bike. I might paint it black in the future

Did the FSA ring turn up? What are the differences in stack height (and weight)?

You know, I forgot to weigh the Cane Creek ring. I compared it and the FSA and they both looked to be the same weight and construction. When I pull it apart again I’ll weigh it.

So since the FSA came with a bearing, comp ring, bearing cover, and top cap, I figured I would use the Cane Creek ring for my current setup.

Here are some pics of the old FSA and new FSA ring. Notice the difference in shoulder height. There is also a slight difference in total height. My digital caliper bit the dust recently and I need to get a new one to get exact measurements.

The new FSA is lighter than the old one.

Ah ok. My FSA ring weighs 1.8g so probably the same one as your lower stack one. Do you know if the Cane Creek was lower stack? My compression ring (I think) has a little drag on my Veloflyte dust cover. I believe they're even lower than Slam that Stem covers, so may just be the nature if the beast. May buy a CC one just to try.

I recently changed frames and pulled out the CC compression ring. Here is the weight for it. I used the FSA ring in my current frame. Same stack height and .2 grams lighter
