Hello guys,

I would like to share with you my new bike project for knowing your impressions:

Frame: De Rosa Protos Mirror Blue and Volcano Red (1150 grms with all the hardware)
Fork: De Rosa dedicated (400 grams uncut)
Seatpost: De Rosa dedicated (190 grams)
Seat Collar: De Rosa dedicated (20 grams)
Group: Sram Etap
Wheels: Corima MCC+ 32 mm (1120 grams)
Saddle: Beast Components Red Carbon (90 grams)
Brakes: Bontrager Speed Stop Pro (190 grams with brake holders)
Integrated Handlebar: Bontrager XXX Bar (240 grams)
Bar tape: Lizard Skins 1.8 (50 grams)
Headset: FSA (70 grams)
Headset Cup & Expander: Schmolke TLO (15 grams)
Bottom Bracket: Cycling Ceramic Ita threat (80 grams)
Skewers: Tune DC14 (40 grams)
Bottle Cage: Elite Leggero (15 grams)
Pedals: Time Xpro 15 (140 grms)
Tubulars: Vittoria Graphene Corsa Control 25 mms (290 grams).

I have attached some images of the frame. It is impossible to capture the color, it is a mix between navy blue and purple. In my opinion it is very beautiful and the finish is just perfect.

It has 4 layers of paint so I am happy with the final weight of the frame.

I have a Madone 9 P1 that weight 6.7 kgms and a Carrera Sl 730 that weight 6.0 kgms but this Protos it is more beautiful than both. I believe that the final weight is going to be around 6.4 kgms.

Its a beautiful frame. I know there were some issues with the xxx bar/stem but think it was just the first production run?

Thank you!
Yes it was with the first model. I have the same bar in my Carrera frame since one year without problems and very happy with it.

Looks great. Is that “Ugo Blue” or more of a lighter shade. Really interested to see this built. Enjoy.

The official name of the color is Mirror Blue and Red Vulcano but, yes is the same blue of the King frame with the Ugo Blue finish.

In one week I will update the topic with the pictures of the bike mounted!

Hi guys,

As promised I have upload some pictures of the final bike.

Very happy with the frame and components combination. The bike is ver responsive like a racing machine but it is also confortable. It is very good for climbing and fast in tje flats. Descending is superb...

By the way, I am in love with the Italian geometry, my Trek Madone 9 is very good but I prefer the angles of the Protos.

The current weight is 6,4 kg with pedals but when I change the tubulars (I prefer 23mm over the current 25mm) and made some minor modifications the final weight will be around 6,250 Kgs with pedals.

Thanks!!

I’d like to resurrect this old thread. There are literally zero reviews on this newer a protos. (That I can find)

What are your thoughts on the bike? How does it compare to other bikes you’ve had?

I have a 2016 Protos that’s being repaired after a car hit me. I’m wondering if I should get this Protos or an F8.

Would love your, or anyone’s, opinion on the bike.

Would like an answer about the sizing too that wasn’t answered.

Does anyone own this bike that’s willing to admit it?

I'm 180 cm, inseam 85 cm, and I have Protos 53cm. It's fine in general, I absolutely wouldn't want a larger frame.

If you look at a geometry table, Protos 53cm is pretty close to previous generation Cannondale Supersix Evo 54 (which I also have) or Dogma 54. But it has a slacker seat tube angle (a saddle is placed further backwards), and the saddle clamp construction doesn't allow to move a saddle forward too much. That's why I had to change my seatpost to a no-offset one. Size 51 would probably be better in terms of saddle placement for me, but I think a head tube would be too short and position way too aggressive. I believe my position is quite low for an amateur, but I still have couple of spacers under the stem on my size 53 bike. I checked what pros of my height ride, it's usually 51 with 130-140 mm stem, but there's no way I'd be able to sit like that :)

So, long story short, I believe size 53 should be optimal for 180 cm, but don't expect the position to be relaxed. 55 would be definitely too large. I hope this helps.
