Expander Plug

I figured the expander plug was an easy place to save a few grams, I had read good reviews about the mcfk plug but I can't find one in stock. Anyone use or familiar with either of the Schmolke plugs from r2? Would they be a suitable alternative or something better out there? Thanks for any info.

Tune gumgum (perhaps difficult to find), or extralite ultrastar

Am using the Schmolke plug, great weight savings because it takes the place of a plug and a cap simultaneously without the need of a bolt. It probably provides far greater support of the steerer tube too if that is a concern for you, as it is longer and has more contact area with the tube interior. Image

Tried the Schmolke SL version of their plug. Could not get it to grip the inside of the steerer tube. The peaks of the alloy knurling were actually being blunted, put a pair of orings in the grooves and all good. Grabbed a Carbon Ti unit and no such problems. Also have the Extralite on another bike also with zero issues.

I'm just about to fit a new Schmolke expander and cap
Comes in a nice little boxImage

I was using an expander from JRC components, it's a similar price but like the @Beanbiken's experience the JRC became blunted and stopped gripping....this was after some time and being re fitted several times

I use a cheap bbb brand expander plug to get the steering and headset tightened up as I like it.

Then i lossen the expander plug , take it out, and put in a tune gumgum.

While probably not as lite as the Extralite Ultrastar, my vote is for the Cane Creek EEnut.

same, though I have to say the design doesn't give me the most confidence ever (Extralite being notorious for parts "pinching" into carbon)

Best???? I would say I am most comfortable with the Carbon Ti, spreads it force over a greater area than the Extralite and has not slipped up till now..........

What do you guys think of a design like the one in these videos? Yes, it's mine and yes, I need to finish the third video showing the bearing preload steps but you ought to be able to get the idea of how it will look when finished.
