Robert axle project makes thru-bolts for the mavic speed release system....very light though original mavics are light as well.

I could not find the mavic thru-bolts for another pair of wheels so went with robert thru-bolt.

Sorry guys I'm back to requesting headset help. I had headset problems with it coming lose. Got the 2.0 expander bolt, which seemed to fix it for about 12 months (2500km)

I took the headset apart to clean up/regrease the spacers, as I could hear a bit of grit had got in there. Now I cannot seem to get the headset to stay tight!
I've tried all the fixes mentioned in these threads (which did work for 12 months).

Now I'm wondering if it's the stem clamp where my issue lies. When the stem bolts are tightened to 5nm the rear of the stem makes contact. So im wondering if my 5nm is just when the two back side of the stem is making contact.

I'm wondering if anyone can confirm if there's a gap between the two sections at 5nm.

I've shone a torch from above so you can see the gap at 4nm and then no gap at 5nm.

Difficult to explain this one. Any advice would be welcome.

Are you tightening the plug first, then the 5nm bolts last?

I recently took mine apart to regrease the headset because i like to use mine on the trainer and I got mine all good to go. Here is what I do (I think I explained it before)

1. Place plug in headset with top stem cap almost toally unscrewed. This is to make sure the top cover can compress the headset.
2. Torque the plug, not totally to spec.
3. Tighten top stem cap to compress headset.
4. Tighten bottom stem bolt a bit. Not to spec. This is to allow the inner plug to get to spec.Do not tighten the top stem bolt as it will not allow the cap to sit flush (if you cut the steerer to be flush)
5. Undo the top stem cap. Torque the inner plug to spec.
6. Tighten the top cover back on and torque to spec.
7. Tighten the stem bolts to spec

The following is followed because: Due to how the headset assembly is manufactured, the compression of the headset requires the inner bolt to expand, in which case the stem bolts will compress against. If you torque the stem bolt before the plug assembly, theres nothing to compress against except the empty carbon tube of the steerer. With the plug assembly in the tube, the headset can compress against the plug and you can secure the assembly against laterial torque.

The system is actually quite neat, but honestly it is needlessly complicated. Also, the torque settings are something that does get me somewhat suspicious. By torquing the stem bolts at the end, you end up increasing the torque of the inner plug assembly. Basically, by design, you end up overtorqueing something (it is practically unavoidable).

I kind of realized all bikes have some sort of "unique issue". Madones have the iso speed and some headset issues, the Canyon has the handlebar issues, and the look had the headset.

I hope this helped. It should remove the play in the headset. You need the plug to compress against.
