Hi guys,

Since this forum is full of experts I would like to ask you if anyone has managed to put absolute black oval r8000 chainring on stages gen3(dual L+R) power meter. I have both, however, I wasn't able to put the chainrings on(the problem is with the outer chainring). Has anyone managed to get them working together? I asked absolute black but they said they haven't tried it yet.

Don't own the stages, but had no issues with the AB 9000 rings on DA 9000 SRM, nor with the AB 9100 rings on Shimano R9100-P powermeters. Seems that if you have the Stages Power R Ultegra 8000 and AB's Oval Road 2x for 9100 & R8000 rings, then there should not be any issues with fiting the outer ring, but if you actually have the 9000/6800 rings, then the outer ring is not going to fit, at least not without modification.

Where is it hitting? Is the ring actually hitting the power meter? As ms6073 suggested, if you actually have 6800/9000 rings, you won't be able to get them on a 8000, the power meter becomes irrelevant.

6800/9000 outer ring needs a bit filing, just one corner.

Yea, I think that's what we're trying to get confirmation on. OP said they have a 8000/9100 ring, which shouldn't need any filing.

If they in fact have a 8000/9100 and it's hitting the Stages meter, that might be a problem; but, if they actually have a 6800/9000, I'd say screw it down to the Shimano rings that came with the crank, use that as a template to mark it, and break out the File/Dremmel.

I have R8000 absolute black rings and r8000 stages, so compatibility wasn't supposed to be the issue. Ring fits perfectly on my original R8000 crankset(the one without stages), but on my stages(which is r8000, L+R gen3 - latest generation), there is no way of getting rings on without damaging the power meter because there is no clearence and the box of stages is pressing on the rings.

So, I guess, unfortenetly AbsoluteBlack isn't compatible with stages : :( I know the previous generation of absoluteblack worked with stages and pioneer(and probably some other power meter) but it looks like this isn't true for the newest absoluteblack. Am I missing something?
I also sent the pics above to Absolute Black and if I get an answer I will post it here.

Yeah, you have not missed anything, but that pm/chainring combo is going to be a non-starter and aside from a refund, I doubt AB is going to be able to help as the rings pre-date that generation of the stages powermeter.

I think you are right. Well, to be honest, I wanted to get confirmation from you guys because I thought that maybe I am just incompetent and can't get them on. I know for a fact that engineers at AbsoluteBlack made the rings so they would fit Dura Ace power meter; too bad they didn't think about Stages power meter which is far more common. The previous generation of AbsoluteBlack was compatible with Stages so I think this was an unintentional mistake. They made the ring thinner in the part where dura ace power meter sits and if they were to make (thinner) line 1,5cm longer, Stages would also fit without a problem.
Probably won't get a refund though because the rings were bought through their distributor and not directly from their website. Anyway, at least now future customers who will be wondering if they are compatible will know for a fact that they are not. Thanks guys!

Wasn't the previous Stages generation similar in design to Pioneer and Shimano with regards to the position of the transmitter pod? I would think given the lack of compatibility, you should be able to return the ring to the distributor.

Its tough to tell how much interference there is from the photos but, if when viewing it in person it looks like it's just a few mm, I wouldn't hesistate to file of the excess ring to provide adequate clearance. I have filed many rings over the years to allow them to fit on various oddball combos without issue and that part of the ring has minimal load on it. If you are concerned with aesthics then a permanent marker will cover up the part that becomes silver.
