3T Ergonova, dent from stem, what do you guys think?
Moderator: robbosmans
I bought this used Ergonova bar recently. From the pics online, the paint just looked scuffed up around the clamping area. My thought was I could sand down the whole bar and lose a couple grams anyways.
So when I received it, there is a dent in the bottom, and a ridge on the top of the clamping area. Think it’s just cosmetic, or is it dangerous to use?
I have seen a few other threads about these 3T bars. There were different opinions about whether the bar needed to be replaced or not. I just want to figure out if I am going to keep this one or not.
Thanks

On the other Ergonovas I have seen with this issue, they just had the ridge on the top. This one has the dent on the bottom too.
And the dent doesn’t sound good with the tap test. The area around the dent sounds hard and sharp, the dent itself sounds dull and muffled.
The seller of this bar didn’t include important info in the listing and pics. It will be going back to him

That looks more like a crack than a dent.
I like the 3T Superergo bar also. It looks to have similar reach and drop to the Ergonova. I wonder if it’s close to the claimed 173 grams? I would be getting a 38cm.
This Ergonova I have now is 190 grams in a size 38cm

There’s some talk about the 3T bars having a soft paint in the center to help with friction. I believe this is true as I also have clamp imprints on my bars. Even when torqued properly the imprints will be there. But this is the first time I’ve seen bars that are damaged this badly.

You can see the carbon exposed and fraying in the second picture. Looks like someone overtorqued their carbon bars, heard a crack, and decided to unload them on some poor sucker.

I wouldnt run that thing in a thousand years. And apart from the safety aspect, you're not going to accept a bar with damage not mentioned by the seller are you...
Understand buying second hand parts because it's a lot cheaper, but bars I would never buy second hand. You never know what the seller did with them and it's very difficult to detect any flaws that are not on the surface. Just bite the bullet, save money for a while, sell a kidney or whatever works for you and be safe
