Campagnolo appears to have two versions of many of their (11-speed) cogs and (three-cog) cog assemblies.

For example, the 15t cog in their 11-23t, 11-25t and all 12-2Xt cassettes is designated "15A", but the 15t cog in their 11-27t and 11-29t cassettes is designated "15D".

The same is true of some of their three-cog assemblies: their 11-25t cassettes uses a "21B-23B-25B", while their 12-25t cassette uses a "21A-23A-25A". And vice-versa as well: both the 11-29t and 12-29t use a "23B-26C-29C".

The preceding appears true whether a Chorus, Record or Super Record 11-speed cassette. (The titanium cogs used in Record and Super Record use the same designations, but the actual purchasable part numbers include a 'T' suffix denoting them as titanium.)

My question is: does anyone know what the significance is of the trailing A, B, C, D's after the cog teeth number?

Thanks,
Scott

From what I understand it has to do with the shift ramping to optimize it.

This is correct ... hence for best shifting, the need to use the correctly-resignated sprocket in the right place.

Other makers do this to varying degrees - in some cases they accept that shifting (especially under torque) won't be as clean or as quick and so offer the ability to build a cassette to user-spec (very much as we used to years ago with freewheels or early cassettes) or they don't offer loose sprockets at all, so wear and tear on a single sprocket can really only be dealt with by buying a full cassette.

It's also worth a note that the format of cassettes between the Potenza / Centaur cassettes and CH-RE-SR is different as in the former case, the fine differentials in sprocket spacing are handled in exactly where in the gauge of the sprocket material the teeth a machined (hence the fact that spacers of consistent thickness can be used and still maintain compatibility with CH-RE-SR derailleur systems) wheras in the latter the differences are handled in the spacers / carriers.

Good topic.

While we're on it, is it possible to buy just the "23-26-29" all-in-one piece on its own? If so, any leads as to where and at what price? I want to swap out the 23-25-27.

The other sprockets are all the same with these two: 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21.

Cheers!

robertbb,

The 23-26-29 cog assembly you are looking for is Campagnolo part number 11S-369 for Chorus (steel) or 11S-369T for Record/Super Record (titanium).
