Sram Red 10 sp to 11 sp, what do I need?

So I am wondering the bare minimum I need to go 11 sp? I already have a wheelset that can take an 11 sp casette and I have and 11 sp casette ready to go.

I am guessing I need an 11sp chain and Rear derailleur?

Will my 10sp brifter need to be replaced or would is be compatable?

Thanks in advance! :beerchug:

No, you need a new shifter and chain, but the old derailleurs will work fine with 11s.

Marin, did you try it before? 11 Sp shifters with 10 speed rear derailleurs?

I was in the same situation a few years back and when I researched, everything I read suggests that the cable pull ratio for 11 sp and 10 sp is different and the derailleurs cannot be reused even though they are both 1:1.
I didn't try, sold both 10 sp Sram Red and force, and went Shimano cos they were cheaper.

You have RED in your topic?

With Sram, everything with "Exact Actuation" will work together. Yes, I am running several 10s derailleurs in 11s systems. For my Red rear derailleurs, I don't even remember which are 10 and which are 11s, they are exactly the same.

I am also running an Exact Actuation MTB derailleur with Force 10s levers with the knowledge that going 11s will only need a new cassette and rear shifter.

Same here. 10sp fd and rd with 11sp shifters.

SRAM keep things simple, it's shimano who like to make things difficult

Good info. I am running Force 22 group. This means I can get Red 10 sp RD as *cheap upgrade* :)

Force to Red RD is not a big upgrade anyway.
A bit lighter and Ceramic bearing pulley, which you can source aftermarket.

Thanks everyone, now all I need is a shifter and chain and I am sorted! Any recommendations for sourcing a shifter? I scoop a chain at my LBS.

If you have the new shape Red Double Taps, I'm 99.5% sure you can get any Sram 11s shifter and transplant the internals. Depending on how you price your time, this might not be worth the effort though.

So, if I may ask a related question. My least favourite groupset is my SRAM Rival 10 speed solely because of the high effort required for small to big ring upshifts with LH lever. It sounds like I could source any SRAM 11 speed levers, chain and cassette in terms of compatability. But in terms of upshift effort required will any of Rival/Force/Red levers require less effort(Shimano and Campag are easier) or do they all require the same absurd amount?

The higher level SRAM shifter have "zero loss" so should have an easier throw . But a lot of the effort will depend on the cable tension, FD limits, routing and cables used.

I have been interested in this option for a while and asked around with no luck. have you experimented with this swap or have any knowledge of it actually being possible? 11speed shifters internals are ALOT cheaper than a new sram red shifter. (yeah i have the "new" shape of the 10 speed sram red levers from 2013)

Not personally, no. I only routinely remove the left shifters from used Double taps - all the same shape - and I know for a fact the shifter bodies are identical across the groups. Best bet would be to look at the Sram exploded drawings and compare parts numbers.
