Russell, that is riddled with faulty logic. Go look up median household income and tell me that they're affording any of the cars you mentioned.

If you ask an average person what an expensive bike is, most will say something along the lines of $800. So, sorry, whatever real world you're living in, it's definitely not the same as most of America.
Nothing faulty about it. Median income for 2016 was $59,000. So HALF, 50%, made MORE than $59,000. So given the fact a tiny percentage of people bicycle, and bicycling is a rich recreational activity in the USA, the vast majority of bicyclists earn a lot of money. Enough so $3000 bicycle frame is insignificant. The car dealers sold MILLIONS of $47, $83, $55 thousand dollar vehicles in the USA in 2017. Someone is buying them. Maybe just the upper half of the population. Half the population may think $800 or one tenth of that is too much to spend on a bicycle. But for the other half, it amounts to the change you would throw at a beggar on the street, if you were the despicable type of person who would do such things.

I am well aware of the income stratification in the USA. A few thousand make millions or billions. And millions make zero. But the mean, median, mode results in an income of $59,000 in the USA in 2016. To get a median income of $59,000, you can have nine people making $1, one person making $58,999, nine people making $59,001 and one person making $1 billion. Median of $59,000!

You must be one of those Google engineers living in the Bay Area that think they're middle class...

Sorry, but if top tier frames are routinely $3K, that by definition means they're expensive relative to other options. I can get a Cdale Evo Hi Mod frame for $3K or I can get a complete CAAD12 105 bike with wheels for $1600.

I bought a motorcycle for $3000. I'm pretty sure $3000 for a frame only qualifies as expensive, 2018 or not.

Doesn't need to be ultra-boutique to qualify as expensive.
You can buy cars for $300. So you spent TEN times more on a motorcycle? Wow!!!! You're one of those Kardashian people for blowing money.

$3000 for a frame only is not expensive. Its not cheap. But its not expensive.

"IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 1, 2018 The analysts at Kelley Blue Book today reported the estimated average transaction price (ATP) for light vehicles in the United States was $36,270 in January 2018. New-car prices have increased by $1,360 (up 3.9 percent) from January 2017, while dropping $486 (down 1.3 percent) from last month."

Median statewide home prices
California$549,000
Texas$295,000
Arizona$339,000
Nevada$344,900
Oregon$420,000
Washington$420,000
(As of 4/1/2018, per Realtor.com.)

Still think $3000 is expensive for a frame?

Go ask anyone who makes a median income in a first world country if they think $3000 for a bicycle frame, not even a complete bicycle, is expensive. Go ask someone who runs a Trek or Fuji dealer what the median price of a bicycle they sell is. $300 car? You mean something over 20 years old, 200k miles and in dire need of repairs?

I'm sorry, but you're grossly out of touch with reality.
No. It is you who is out of touch with reality. I'm sure the median price for the Trek dealer in my town is about $3500. Includes new $150 helmet, $250 shoes, $300 pedals.
As for the median income person thinking a bicycle is expensive, is that person driving his 7 year financed $75,000 SUV or 4x4 pcik up crew cab? $3000 bicycle frame is expensive, but $100,000 pick up is affordable. $300 cars are easy to find. Yet you wasted $3000 on a motorcycle? Wow.
How does this even make sense in your head?

Housing prices of real estate assets including land, average car being a $100k pick up not as a bussiness expense, easy to find functioning $300 cars that aren't more trouble than they're worth, LBS selling half their bikes at $3500 or above, $3000 on a bicycle frame being not expensive? Am I just being trolled, or do people like this actually exist?
Not sure why you brought up housing prices. In the USA in 2017, there were 2.2 million full size pickups sold. GM, Ford, Dodge. The average full size pickup price in the USA in Dec. 2017 was $47,600. Full size SUV was $83,000, midsize SUV was $55,000. Add in $10-15 thousand interest over a finance period and you are at $75,000. Yet you believe all these millions of people with brand new 2017 pickups and SUVs will think a $3000 bicycle frame is Expensive. Funny. For a $300 car look for a well used Toyota compact car. It will last another decade, 100,000 more miles with no problems. Toyotas run forever. It will far outlast your expensive motorcycle. My biggest LBS is a Trek dealer. He sells a lot of expensive Treks and all the accessories. Median price of all the Treks he sells is at least $3500 if not much more. Probably much more with all the new iterations of SRAM and Shimano and mechanical and electronic.

I live in the real world. I see things. I hear things. I read things.

A) There's a difference between mean and median, look it up.
B) 2.2 Million cars. You realize there are 325 million people in the US?`

WTF? Wasn’t this supposed to be about budget light frames?

I’d recommend a Cervelo RCA- it’s light and approx 10% of the cost of my car  that’s pretty cheap when you apply some of the “logic” (for lack of a better word) contained in this thread

Guys, the OP isn’t living in the US so comparisons to wages or houses or cars in some foreign land aren’t going to help him choose a frame.

Could I politely suggest to discuss issues specific to the politics of your country, you find some local forum and not an international cycling site?

For 1500 EUR sub 7kg bike can be build even on aluminium frame with ~1300 g custom alumium wheels, sram force/red mechanical and some no name carbon handlebar, seatpost, saddle. For sub 6,5 kg it would be wise to get sub 900 g carbon frame with BB30/PF30 BB

Good carbon frames that can be bought for less than 500 EUR (used):

- Cannondale Supersix Hi Mod (old models)
- Scott Addict HMX/RC (old models)
- Focus Izalco Max
- BH Ultralight
- Fuji SL
- and more ...

Yes, $580 direct. https://hongfu-bikes.en.alibaba.com/pro ... tpost.html

Older model road frames can be bought for a lot less.

Is there a reason why Chinese carbon won't work? Too risky? I got over 50k miles on mine and no complaints whatsoever.

where?
just very easily sold an izalco max 2014/20000km for 650.- and a super six evo hm 2013/7000 km for 720.-, so in this cases, sub 500. euro could imo be difficult (ok, always depends on condition)
those old hmx rc addicts are available for sub500 euro even new!

On ebay com, co.uk or de. Just need to save search result and wait. I didn't say that this is a regular price but it's possible to buy any of those framesets in perfect condition for around 500 EUR (especially in winter).
