Wheels for the Canyon Aeroad Disc
Moderator: robbosmans
Rode my Canyon Aeroad Disc for the 1st time this week. The bike is sensational! Climbed close to 7000 meters on it and it even does that as well as any bike I've ridden.
I rode the stock 62mm Reynolds up and down Mount Lemmon and had a bit of a concern in strong crosswinds coming down. Let's just say it was borderline skittish at times.
I had already committed to purchasing a lighter wheelset for the Haute Route Alps, and had chosen the Roval CLX 50 Disc, which are a good 300g lighter than my Reynolds.
However, given the experience of descending for 20 miles in strong crosswinds with the stock wheelset, I'm questioning whether 50mm, even with more of a modern "blunt" profile like the Rovals, is a good choice for Haute Route (which will see me descend 20,000 + meters) or whether something shallower might be better?
Would Enve 3.4 Disc wheels be any better in crosswinds and worth going with their shallower profile and steeper price, considering they are the same weight as the deeper Rovals? Or would the stability difference be only marginal?

While not disc wheels and not scientifically based input, I run a set of Enve 3.4s, Zipp 303s and Zipp 404s. There is a big change in cross-wind handling as you go from the 3.4s to the 303s and the 404s can be downright exciting at times. I would think the 3.4s would serve you well both in terms of handling wind and still remain light and somewhat aero.
yes it's always a trade off between aero and cross-wind resistance... if more aero is needed clx50 it is then...

According to specialized, the new wide CLX32 is more aero than their old 40mm carbon wheels.
Are you that fast going up a hill that you're worried about aero wheels? If I bought a set of wheels for climbing, they'd be very shallow (and light) like the CLX32 or 202s.

Cosmics are quite sensitive to crosswinds. At least for me, being a lighter rider, there's a noticable difference compared to my 303's.

Maybe just pick up an AR41 for the front when you need it ?
Cyclocross, in general, is about riding the wrong bike for the conditions.

My Zipp 303 NSW wheels are pretty sketchy is strong cross wind. My Enve 3.4 SES somewhat less so. If cross wind is the main consideration, I would do as others suggest and get a shallower front wheel.
It's not very aero to get blown off the road in a cross wind.
