Hi All

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did a search but didn't find much.

Not wanting to restart the Di2 vs etap debate generally, just want to know what people (who have ridden both) think of the braking performance. I'm thinking power, modulation, noise in the dry, noise in the wet etc.

Any experiences with both sets of brakes?

Thanks
GJ

By many reports Campy is probably the best right now for disc braking, then probably Shimano then SRAM.

The company with the first-generation product made for them by Magura is the "best?" Citation needed.

I can tell you at least one thing. H11 rotors are designed in a way that give no consideration to noise. The high number of evenly spaced vertical vents turn the brakes into WWII Carter air raid sirens (or Chewbacca.)

Am currently on Hydro Shimano (R685 levers and Zee calipers), but have been on a variety of disc braked rioad bikes over the last 8 years - BB7 Road cable, TRP Parabox (with original calipers and then converetd Avid Guide 4 pot calipers), Shimano Cable CX70 discs, and then current incarnation.

Haven't tried SRAM or Campagnolo.

My Shimano stuff has been hassle free, but I like the ability to buy spares (seals etc) for the SRAM gear.

Dura-Ace rotors are just as bad.

Yep, that's why SRAM's rotors have staggered, organically shaped, horizontal vents. It spreads the sound across a spectrum of frequencies, rather than amping the hell out of one frequency.

Organically shaped?

Really? Mine (new Dura Ace) are as quiet as the Sram rotors (under braking) I used before them. The older ice tech ones I had some issues with noise.

My experience with etap disc is limited to riding around a parking lot to bed them in, so I can't offer anything besides the initial impression that they are a bit more progressive than the Shimano brakes which have more initial bite and have a little more of a crisp feel. This is the same kind of engineered difference between the two brands MTB brakes and really is a personal preference or what you're used to type thing.

no experience with SRAM, but Shimano works very well and new di2 hydraulic levers are nicely shaped. Many people use 160/140 rotor setup, proof that the braking power is more than enough, modulation better than rim brakes, you can't make a mistake with these..
etap should be ok as well, they tuned some initial problems, better bleeding now. when deciding it shouldbe matter of other things than braking, both systems are great brakes.

Edited due to complaints. Thanks, PP

You can see that all the vents are rounded and the long ones have a slight concavity to them.

I'm using the 160 Campy rotor on my rear eTap HRD brake without the noise you've mention. Put it at the front tho it will squeal.... maybe the caliper doesn't align perfectly with the rotor.

Not so much a squeal as a moan. With the HRD/H11 combo, you've surely heard the Chewbacca droning sound when it's mounted in the front.

That's a new one - by many Campy discs are silent. They are silent on my bike.

I cannot find a bad review on H11 yet - have you? At worst they are as good as Shimano.

I'm guessing Campy's pads are different shape than HRD - you might have to space the HRD Caliper out a little so the pads are not hitting the slots.

I put Potenza HO on my gravel bike and had to use RX4's as it was post mount and had to space the calipers out a little more to keep them engaging the Rotor part and not the spokes of the rotor if that makes sense.

Maybe the Campy pads - which are made for campy calipers and rotors aren't as tall?
