135mm road bikes are on the cards. My 1991 Sannino is a race bike but the stays spring out to 135mm.

What do you mean with direct mount rear derailleurs?
I know direct mount brakes but not direct mount derailleurs.

It's the weird new mech hanger design introduced by Shimano with DA9100. It doesn't look any more or less directly mounted than derailleurs always have been but what do I know.

The bikeradar patent serch that's been in the news was a bit of a wasted opportunity to dig a bit further. There's another campag patent on a similar date and has more details on the cassette (yes, it's dished over the spokes) and a narrower chain:

If you have a look at other recent Campag patents, there's info on EPS batteries built into the mechs (wireless?), fluid-damped clutches (1-by?) and a wierd one where the EPS motor is allowed to disengage and spin with the mech cage (I think). There's also an aero through-axle with a retractable lever.

The move to thru axles means the direct mount RD's are a better design as instead of a hanger set into a thinner dropout out area a frame maker can use a beam/link instead so the whole interface is stiffer and the dropout is stronger. There is a good reason why it is used on MTB's and since road bikes are taking on MTB standards this will be next.

It also helps with the move to 1x11 or 12 with a 11-40T cassette which like it or roadies is the way we are going. I would like that for my race bike but currently as i have 2015 record with a 11-32T cassette and 52T single ring.

Besides the vast majority of new bikes sold from now on will be 142mm OLD and disc-brake equipped.

142mm OLD is a bit misleading. The distance between the dropouts is only 135mm. There are 3.5mm pockets either side for the axle ends to fit into to help with thru axle installation which gets you to 142mm. You aren't gaining 6mm per side, but a mere 2.5mm just like MTBs.

I didn’t say 142mm TA and 135mm QR were different. I know the hub shells are the same. The point is 135mm QR rim-brake hubbed bikes have no long term evolutionary path. Rim brake bikes don’t in general.

12 speed is possible without Boost. SRAM have done it with the eagle. I do wonder what the smallest large cog is though with 12 speed on non boost hubs.

MTB Eagle uses XD freehubs, which are no wider than current a Shimano 11spd freehubs. Not sure why everyone is hinting at wider OLDs. If anything it’s road bottom brackets that have needed to be wider since disc standardized on 135mm.

Doubt it, but time will tell.

I think the changes as of late in a lot of the new stuff coming out over th elast few years is simply for the sake of offering something new and not necessarily better, but what do I know.

Still holding out for wireless 11 Sp EPS that is almost entirely tuned with an app. When it comes out I'll switch all my bikes. As pointed out above, going to a mechanic, at least in all the parts of the US where I have lived and mentioning Campagnolo is like talking about the Devil in church. Everybody hates it because they are not well trained in it and don't see it often. Matter of fact, I went to a shop last week in a very affluent area of South FL that caters to racers and such and asked if they work on Campy. The answer was "yeah, we could figure out something. But you might want to switch son because I hear they are going out of business in the next couple of months". Walked out 5 secs later shaking my head
