Campagnolo 12-Speed
Moderator: robbosmans
There still is a tradeoff with Campag controls. To me it seems like the 12s brake levers standard reach is quite close to the 11s ones with the "insert for large hands" inserted, and the short reach is similar to the 11s without. The upside on 12s is that it's easy to change now. Still a long shot from what you can do with Shimano and SRAM, but as the ergonomics per se are so much better on Campag it evens out.

Can someone please answer this question: It would be great if someone has some first hand experience.
Will a full 12 speed set up work but using 11-speed rings and spacing? I know it may not be 100% perfect, but near perfect will be good enough. The reason is to retain my 5 arm SRM across bikes.

We had a team bike built up last season with a 11 speed P2max AG’s it was fine.ghisallo2003 wrote:Can someone please answer this question: It would be great if someone has some first hand experience.

Lots of teams "test" stuff out, but Ive seen numerous pictures of Cofids and Lotto riders who were riding EPS 12 with the 11s rings on the SRM kit...ghisallo2003 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2019 8:07 pmCan someone please answer this question: It would be great if someone has some first hand experience.

I've got a 11spd 5-bold Campag PM2 with campag rings and it works fine. I have a feeling it does affect the chainline and make the drivetrain a bit noisey. But Im not sure. Shifting is fine.ultimobici wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2019 9:14 pmWe had a team bike built up last season with a 11 speed P2max AG’s it was fine.ghisallo2003 wrote:Can someone please answer this question: It would be great if someone has some first hand experience.

I think the 11 speed 130mm chainline should be better than 12 speed - it is not a compromise designed to accommodate 130/135/142. Am I missing something?

The HO 11s went to a 1mm wider offset (44.5mm) vs standard 11s (43.5), and the new 12s follows the same pattern as the 11s HO line with the 44.5 offset... I think that why there is curiousity if 11s rings work... there is also a distinct outer ring for the HO 11s crankset..
Will that outer ring turn a non HO crankset into a HO one?ParisCarbon wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 8:17 pmThe HO 11s went to a 1mm wider offset (44.5mm) vs standard 11s (43.5), and the new 12s follows the same pattern as the 11s HO line with the 44.5 offset... My mistake... after looking at the Campy doc,its BOTH inner and outer rings that are specific... so it seems they worked the ring vs the crank for the offset...robertbb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2019 9:52 amWill that outer ring turn a non HO crankset into a HO one?ParisCarbon wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 8:17 pmThe HO 11s went to a 1mm wider offset (44.5mm) vs standard 11s (43.5), and the new 12s follows the same pattern as the 11s HO line with the 44.5 offset... Thanks for clarifying, but I'm still wondering if a swap of both rings to the HO ones will bring a 2015+ non-HO crank in line with a HO crank, and therefore in line with 12s...ParisCarbon wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2019 3:23 pmMy mistake... after looking at the Campy doc,its BOTH inner and outer rings that are specific... so it seems they worked the ring vs the crank for the offset...robertbb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2019 9:52 amWill that outer ring turn a non HO crankset into a HO one?ParisCarbon wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 8:17 pmThe HO 11s went to a 1mm wider offset (44.5mm) vs standard 11s (43.5), and the new 12s follows the same pattern as the 11s HO line with the 44.5 offset... Not sure on the hydro version but the lever distance is adjustable on the rim versiondgdracing wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 6:36 pmAfter the first two rides I really like the Campa group (12 speed disc). Especially the right thumb with its ability to shift multiple gears at once is very useful. I just have a small issue, maybe someone can relate to this: the right shifter touches the brake lever after shifting, so it does not automatically go back to the default position. The brake levers are relatively close to my hands (not max though), but it seems a bit weird :/
Thanks for your help,
Daniel
1mm offset is unlikely to make very much difference in practice. It’s a very small evolutionary change. Consider that without the 1mm offset the worst affected gear will be the small-small combination, which is generally best avoided anyway.
Worth campagnolo making the change, but I’d happily fit non-HO cranks on a bike with 135mm rear spacing.
