While removing tyres and tubes, I weighed the Giant PR-2 alloy disc wheels that came with my Giant road bike.

With QR skewers and disc rotors attached, they weighed in at:

- 1.095kg front,
- 1.305kg rear (1.625kg minus Shimano 105 cassette, 11-32 = 320g).

I knew they were no lightweights, but daaaaaamn!

I was hoping to achieve N+1 last year but finances changed. But perhaps I can do a modest WW upgrade on my current ride :D So I'm wondering if there are any disc wheelsets under or around USD$1200/AUD$1500 that would be a noticeable improvement?

I don't race, I do group rides, solo hill rides and commute. I'm a tall skinny 67kg/147lb. I've been running 25mm tyres but just ordered some 28s to try.

Thanks!

If your in Aus maybe look at this guy
Cadence wheels - the Decadence range are lighter
https://www.carbonbikewheels.com.au/en/

Site says 38mm clinchers 1400g for Au$1800ish

I've been thinking about getting some disc tubulars from him when he releases the lighter Decadence version

I felt I got outstanding value for money with a set of hand built wheels from Ax-Lightness in Germany:
- Carbon Ti disc hubs
- Sapim CX-Ray / Sprint spokes
- Venn TCD clinchers

Tubeless setup, 1338g without tape, ~€1200

I will soon be receiving my rims and spokes and can begin building these:

Farsports FSL25-TM-23 (253/254g actual per Farsports)
Sapim CX-Ray spokes 24/24
Aluminum nipples
Bitex BX106F/R hubs (133g front, 247g rear with white powdercoat finish)

Total weight: ~1115 grams
Total cost (delivered): $450 rims, spokes, nipples + $190 hubs with custom white powdercoat (otherwise $170 I believe) = $640

With IceTech rotors I'm looking at ~1350g (wheelset weight equivalent to your stock rear weight!) or ~1725g with and Vittoria Corsa Speed 23mm tubular tires plus glue (and likely sealant for those paper thin tires). Hoping to convince myself to splurge on a Record cassette which would only add another ~200 grams.

Fulcrum Racing Quattro Carbon DB??? They are 40mm and can be had for $1300 aud.
With your criteria i would also consider Wiggle/CRC's own brand Prime wheels.

- fulcrum quattro carbon 40
- flo front 45 rear 60
- reynolds assault

I haven't been able to post for several days, but thanks to everyone for the feedback.

For AUD$1100 total, I ended up ordering the Prime RP-38 carbon disc clinchers from CRC, along with some Ultegra ice-tech rotors, and an Ultegra 11-32 cassette (my bike is full 105). All up should save me 600g from my wheelset, and hopefilly I'll get a mild aero boost for the rare times I find myself going fast :D

Tour magazine did a big test of disk wheelsets and the Fulcrum Quattro DB came out as the overall winner.

I'm sure they're great wheels but with the rotors and cassette I exceeded my $1000 budget anyway. The Fulcrums would have been another $500 on top of that, so they sadly got cut as a contender almost immediately.

The Fulcrums go for $1,000 USD which is why I mentioned it.

Someone else suggested (just after I'd bought the Primes) to check out Hunt wheels. They seem very light and affordable too, for anyone else watching this thread. They might have got the nod if I'd heard about them 24 hours earlier, but I'm sure the Primes will be an upgrade over the stock Giant wheels I'm currently on:
